Please help me troubleshoot no valid RF signal

Post by dexterdom » Fri Jun 16, 2017 7:32 am

Hello Admin,

I just bought a Meteobridge PRO and I'm not able to get any RF communications between my ISS (Davis Vantage Pro2) and the Meteobridge PRO.
My ISS has station ID = 4 and I'm having no issues with my Davis Pro2 console. No matter what I try, I keep getting "no valid RF signal" in the logs.
From the wiki page, I enabled the RF signal strength but I only get double dashes (--) on my display. I even put the meteobridge right next to the ISS to eliminate any range issues and still get no signal (see attached photo). Please help me troubleshoot this problem - I have spent a LOOOOT of money on this device and want to get it working ASAP!
Thanks!

Edit: looks like I can't attach photos- essentially I took my meteobridge, battery powered per your wiki suggestion, and paced it right next to my ISS - I still only had dashes instead of signal strength. In the "Station" screen I deined my ISS as Station #4. As i mentioned my Davis console is having no issues collecting data from the ISS.

Please help me troubleshoot - what should I try next?

Edit #2:
I tried many combinations of RF Sens (from -110db to -30db) and wide/normal/narrow - all with the same result: double dashes on the signal strength and "no valid RF signal" in the logs

Did I get a defective unit? What settings can I try?

Where are you located? Do you have the RF Module set for your 900mhz band? AU/US/EU or NZ

Hi there
I'm in Canada and ordered the Davis station from the US, so it's set to 900Mhz...

Just for kicks I tried all the different frequencies (US, EU, AU and NZ) but none worked.
When I get home I will try setting the station ID back to 1, just in case that might be the issue.
Throughout this time, the Davis console has been receiving data from the ISS 100% reliably, so I'm sure there is no issue on that end.
Unless there is some specific combination of RF sensitivity and wide/normal/narrow that I'm missing, I really don't know what I could check.

Here is a summary of my settings (on the Station tab). As I mentioned my ISS is set to station #4, so hopefully I have this configured correctly.
Other than the ISS, I don't have any other sensors or transmitters.

RF Module: Vantage
US 915 MHz
RF Sens: -90db
Narrow
Rain 0.2mm
Station #4: Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS)

And here are my latest logs in case I missed something obvious:

Top of the Station Tab, do you have the "Use internal RF receiver" box ticked?

Yes that's ticked. Should it be unticked?

I just thought of something: I bought the MBPro from the UK seller because I couldn't find a US seller that would ship to Canada. Is there a EU flavour of the MB that I might have, or is there only one global version?

RF box should be ticked. The only difference between EU and US is the 900 bandwidth which is handled by the RF Module option

So it seems like I've made some progress:-)
I put my console into rebroadcast mode and noticed that I started to get valid signal readings on the display at approx -75db. I then changed the sensitivity to -80 and I now seem to be getting consistent readings from the iss, and have disabled rebroadcast on the console.
One thing I noticed is that it takes a very long time (approx 5 min) for the MB to start reading data from the ISS so perhaps I was not waiting long enough after reboots whenever I tried a new setting during my experimentation.

Is this delay normal? I don't see it being a big problem, since reboots should be very infrequent going forward, but I was just wondering if the delay between startup and data acquisition is expected behavior.

Actually another follow up question. I noticed that the signal strengths reported for temp, wind and rain sensors are not identical. Since I only have one transmitter in the ISS I would expect these readings to be the same db levels. Why are these different?

That type of delay (or even longer) for first connection is not uncommon but once matched then following the next reboot it should connect up much quicker.

Haven't really thought about the difference but each sensor does not provide data at the same intervals which is also shown in seconds etc hence the signal strength is possibly linked to the strength when data for that sensor is received?

Thanks for the info, I was wondering what the seconds for each reading represented. The difference make sense now.
I'm consistently getting a long acquire time after every reboot of the MB - I wonder if it has to do with the lower signal reading that I'm getting (approx -75db). I might experiment by moving it closer to the ISS to see if it makes a difference. BTW when I say "long acquire time" I mean approx 5 minutes, so in the grand scheme of things it's really not THAT long :-)

I'm also considering replacing the antenna on the MB with a bigger one, but the Wiki article about swapping antennas doesn't show much of an improvement with the ones that were tried.
Would you be able to recommend any specific patch or yagi antennas that would work better?

I have tried some different WiFi/RF antenna but didn't see enough change to adopt.

The MB reception doesn't appear to be the same (in distance) as a Davis to Davis setup and really the claimed 900-1000 feet with Davis is under ideal conditions.

Yes that's what I feared. I found a used patch antenna on ebay so I think I'll try it and see what happens. My MB is only about 100 feet line of site to the Davis ISS, but there are some bushes and a wall in the path.

When you have a Davis console near by, you can also make it retransmitting packets on a separate transmitter id and have Meteobridge reading that. It will need bandwidth switched to normal, as frequency drift gets a bit higher.
