Running meteohub on a raspberrypi

Post by geoair » Fri Sep 16, 2011 7:06 pm

Hi,
Although it is not fully developed/available, I'm wondering if it would be possible to run  meteohub on a raspberrypi 'plug'.
Specs (info from wiki)
The first product is about the size of a credit card, and is designed to plug into a TV or be combined with a touch screen for a low cost tablet. The expected price is $25 for a fully-configured system.
  • 700MHz Broadcom media processor featuring an ARM11 (ARM1176JZF-S) core, Broadcom GPU core, DSP core and support for Package-on-Package (PoP) RAM
128MiB (Model A) or 256MiB of SDRAM (Model B), stacked on top of the CPU as a PoP device
    OpenGL ES 2.0
    1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
    Composite and HDMI video output
One USB 2.0 port provided by the BCM2835
    SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
    General-purpose I/O (About 16 3v3) and various other interfaces, brought out to 1.27mm pin-strip
Optional integrated 2-port USB hub and 10/100 Ethernet controller (Model B)
Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python)
Capability to support various expansion boards
Kind Regards,
Jorge

many things can be done... but I doubt there is a significant market in the weather enthusiast arena for a naked board.

When you say naked, are you referring to the fact that it doesn't (yet) have an enclosure/case/box?If so, there're plans to make it available later or there's the option to do some DIY here and here.
But from a technical point of view, it would be possible?
Best regards,
Jorge

The B version of the board looks capable enough to me, that a meteohub port could be done. We ll see, when the units come out as planned in December. A $35 pricepoint for the naked board plus about $10 for housing and power supply will bring it up near to $50. Compared to a more powerful iConnect (in the Meteohub context - the rasberrypi has additional HDMI output which Meteohub does not make use of) which can be purchased in the US for $60 - $70 and for 30 GBP from Cyrrus in UK it is not such a bargain. However, when the units are available I will have a look at it.

Does Cyrrus in UK have a website?
I'm also considering the iomega iconnect + meteohub combo (although a bit expensive for my wallet) to replace my desktop running 24/7/365 to share my VP2 weather data but here in Portugal the offer of the Iomega is scarse and (very) expensive...
Best regards
