Running Meteohub on a Synology DiskStation?

Post by Hathor27 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 11:45 pm

Hi there,

does anybody know, if Meteohub runs on a Synology DiskStation? There is a Debain Linux running on several processors,
see list at http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.ph ... y_NAS_have

My specific question is, if it runs on
  • Freescale MPC8533 PPC Processor , or
  • Marvell Orion mv5281 ARM Processor
The reason is, my DiskStation is running anyway and there would be enough performance and more than enough diskspace left to host Meteohub too

Thanks a lot in advance
Best Regards
Hathor27

That's sad, as I would be also a new candidate for meteohub - if the software would run on a Synology station.

The reason why I haven't choosed meteohub yet is that I don't want to buy another piece of hardware only to run the software on it. In addition some of the recommended hardware is not produced anymore, e.g NSLU2. Synology seems to be very common and the company continues their product line.

Unfortunately my programming skills are not sufficient, to offer my help for adapting the meteohub software to Synology.

did you consider an iconnect based meteohub setup?

Sure there are several other hardware solutions but all have one common issue, you have to buy another piece of hardware to connect to your Synology Discstation. Is it really that time consuming to adapt meteohub to Synology?
From what I have seen in this forum, it seems there are quite a few people who are using the DiskStation.
If it's a question of price, let me know how much it shall cost to adapt meteohub. Maybe we can find a solution

Well, keep in mind that we are not only talking about the initial development; after a release Boris will need to maintain that specific version as well.

And what if you upgrade the FW on your NAS sometime int he future (because Synology released a feature that you really, really want) it might "break Meteohub.

Also, let's assume that MH is indeed running on your NAS, and due to a nasty bug MH corrupts you NAS data, who will be responsible?

On the other hand, if you run MH on a dedicated platform, whether it's NSLU2/Iomega/Sheeva, Boris is completely in control and can manage the entire environment.

The concearns are in place and also not. If you look at the aditional packages, that you can use - most of them have no problems after the upgrade. Older versions work also well. Maybe the development can be done in the way, that it can access just the folder where the data of the Meteohub is (you create a user, who has access just to that folder) and other data can not be touched. We are here not talking of replacing the entire system, just as an add-on. Nothing more. And all of the data can allo get corrupted here (yes, most of us are making backups, right?) that also a loss of impotant data...
