MB Pro - Power Supply

Re MB Pro power connection I thought I read somewhere (unable to find the reference right now) that the MBPro can be powered via the USB2 port (under the WiFi ant) but the Batt/Power functions are not supported as they are for the 5V Power port?

Ok IF the MB Pro was powered from independent power sources (at same time) via 5V Power & USB2 what would be the effect?

1) With duplicate power inputs? Considering voltages would be different unless there is some sort of power filter.
2) If this was possible would the power rollover (without any downtime) if primary power source to 5V power port was lost?

Interesting question, If I understand you correctly you are thinking of attaching a portable USB phone charger (power pack) at the same time as the unit is powered by DC, so in the event of a power failure the battery pack would take over. A bit like an UPS on the cheap.

I would also be interested to know if this would work.

What we do now in remote environments with Davis Envoy's and WLIP is dual solar panels to a dual battery solar regulator programmed for a 90/10% primary/secondary battery charge split. In normal operation the Envoy/WLIP/Router is powered from the primary battery via a Low Voltage Disconnect device, the Envoy backup is connected to the secondary battery via an adjustable regulator so as to run at around 4.7volts (equiv to 3*AA's) which is less than the normal operating voltage of 5-6 volts. The Envoy in normal operation runs from the higher voltage and will auto switch to backup on primary power loss.

In the advent of a primary battery issue (low batt, no sun, general failure etc) the LVD disconnects the primary battery (to save it from getting to an unrecoverable voltage) and the Envoy continues to log data on backup power, which at this point we know there is a primary power issue which may or may not rectify itself if the battery gets back up to charge and the LVD re-connects or we need to fix things which being remote can take some time to organize. Running only on backup the Envoy has a much extended run period all beit in practice only up the available memory capacity.

So if the MB Pro could be powered in a similar manner then maybe a similar power capability/scenario could be achieved?

Power train of all USB ports is directly connected with 5V power in. To be precise this is not exactly true, as the power in has a voltage/amp measurement unit connected to it. it is not recommended to feed the MB PRO with anything other than stabilized 5V. Giving more to it might blow US devices connected to it.

What might be the issues then if both micro ports on the MP Pro were powered (stable 5V etc)?
