Just built a RPi 3 with the latest image (5.0s) and as soon as it boots for the 1st time it states that the
demo version has timed out and that a license must be purchased - "Demo Version has timed out. You need to purchase a license with the embedded PayPal function for further operation".


Is the download image for the RPi now so out of date that it doesn't have an evaluation period?

You need to do the upgrade to 5.0x, which isn't expired. That is, install 5.0s, then upgrade to 5.0x.
