using dd with Vista?

Has anyone had success using dd to install the disk images on the USB thumb drive from a Vista machine?

The first problem I experience is that Microsoft spells "removable" as "removeable" so the "--filter" option won't work. Then I get a "Error native opening file: 0" message.

Here is the command I used:
dd if=meteohub-v2.6-4GB.dd of=\\\\?\\Device\\HarddiskVolume8\\Partition0 bs=1M --size --progress

Thanks for any help.
Jeff

I have always 3 or 4 running Linux machines at hand, and DD works very smoothly with it.

If Vista doesn´t do it for you, have you tried a LIVE CD of a Linux distributor?
OPENSUSE or UBUNTU or Knoppix have free LIVE Cd´s available for download. You burn a CD with the image, boot your PC from it and use the native unix DD command to create your USB-Stick.
Accessing removable USB-Storage and even the local harddisk should work without problems

Just my 2 cents ...

dd on vista won't do.

you can use the trick with the two USB sticks to let the NSLU2 (with Meteohub firmware 2.3) setup the target USB stick itself.

The manual explains how...
