Connection challenges

My MB Pro seems to only want to connect to its friends via radio. The unit is currently working via wifi to the internet and picking up a console repeater signal for station data.
1) I would like to connect to the internet using the ethernet port on the back of the MB Pro, but whether I use DHCP or fixed IP I cannot get it to connect (have tried various wires and switches that work well for other devices but no luck). I should point out that this never worked quite right for me from the start, but the problem before today was that anytime I plugged a lan cable from the MB into a switch my whole network would freeze up. I never debugged this since it was a pesky problem and wifi was working so I took the easy way out and just never used a cable.
1) I would also like to be able to use the USB connection on the back of the MB Pro to connect to the USB data logger coming out of my Vantage Pro 2 Console (for inside temperature for example). However, when I connect the USB plug into the unit, the MB will no longer connect to the internet at all, neither wifi nor ethernet will work. This is a new issue it seems because I had it working via wifi and the USB data logger for some weeks until today. But today the internal SD card finally gave up the ghost with the 'disk full' problem, and after I resolved that issue temporarily I could not reconnect to the internet AT ALL until I removed the USB data logger connection. Then I was able to get wifi. As mentioned above I cannot get the LAN port to work at all. But when I plugged the USB back in again for the console I lost the wifi! And I could not get wifi back by simply rebooting the MB. I had to revert back to an initial install and re-input the wifi credentials with the MB serving as a wifi access point like when it was brand new. I have spent enough hours on this today, including a complete factory reset attempt so I am not going to fiddle with it any more for now. But why should plugging the the console via USB apparently completely corrupt the ability to make a wifi connection?
Any ideas on this? Am I doomed to not get the full data from the console via USB? Does this sound like anything that could have been affected by recent updates since at least the wifi/USB setup was working a few days ago (I probably got the latest firmware today when I rebooted in the context of the internal storage issue).
