NanoSD freezes often

Post by mcl1981 » Sun Mar 08, 2020 3:11 pm

I have a NanoSD in a Davis VP2. The Nano has the black wire if that matters. Both are only about 2 months old. I've having an issue where Meteobridge seems to be locking up or bogging down, ceasing to send data to the networks. When this happens, sometimes I can connect to Metrobridge's web interface. If I go to the weather nets page, data will be sent to the nets once then never again. Rebooting the Nano restores functionality until next time. This has now happened multiple times.

The VP2 console has batteries and the included Davis USB 200mah power supply. I just swapped it out with a normal 2.5a USB power supply so that should eliminate any power deficiencies.

The Nano gets warm enough that my indoor temperature reading is +10 over actual, and doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it other than putting a fan behind the console. Is this normal?

Below is from just after this morning's reboot:

I had a similar problem. The responsiveness of the web interface would slow significantly and the on the System tab, it would show a high Buffer count until I reset the system, after which it would run normally for a day or two, after which the buffer count would start to increase. This went on for some time, and I ultimately replaced the Davis console power adapter and the Meteobridge SDcard at the same time. No problems at all since them (more than 3 months ago). Unfortunately, since I made both changes at the same time, I'm not sure which solved the problem, but most likely, it was the SD card.

Since I have replaced the power supply, I suspect you're right about the SD card.

The 200ma VP2 power adapter is probably not enough to run the VP2 even with a Black handle Nano, the red handle Nano requires even more power than the highest Davis adapter available. Red handle use 1000ma, Black handle at least 500ma

I doubt it would be the SD card, more likely the power adapter?

I already have a 3000mah USB power supply on this thing so it's not the power. That didn't change the behavior.

I put the SD card in my linux machine and it seemed to read and function properly. If I were to get a new SD card, or wipe this one out, where does the image that's on it now come from??

I don't think the SD card is the problem. Please change WLAN settings of your AP or router to use a fixed channel only. When the RF channel is changed on the fly, the NANO will drop the connection.

That's already the case on my network. My WLAN is fixed on on CH 11 for 2.4ghz. I live in the middle of farmland so there is no other wifi interference. The web UI starts getting slower and slower and slower. Stops reporting to the networks. Eventually the web UI just fails to load, but never fails to connect. If I power cycle or reboot, usually it comes back up until it starts failing again hours or days later. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 reboots to start working again.

This is really frustrating.

While I understand the skepticism, replacing the memory card that came with the unit with a Swissbit SFSD2048N1BM1MT-I-ME-221-STD from Mouser seemed to do the trick. Assuming you are confident you don't have a power supply issue, which is more likely. It sounds like you have ruled that out, so I suggest replacing the memory card. If you are willing to lose any data you've collected so far, simply replace the memory card, and the meteobridge will configure the new device with no issue. Keeping your data would require backing it up and then restoring.

OK, so that answers my question about where the file system on the card comes from. The Nano does that all for me, super!

So I'm now thinking this may be WiFi related. I had an extender on my network, with an IP camera on it. Those two devices were very unstable due to signal quality (distance). I removed them from my network and the Nano SD has been stable working fine ever since. I also noticed the same problem would happen if I turned on the controller for my drone, which is very high powered 2.4ghz LTE over WiFi.

So from what I've seen, any WiFi instability seems to just crash out the Nano SD. If this is the case, I would call that a design flaw as no other WiFi devices I've ever owned do that. Sure it might temporarily interfere with the connection, but it doesn't make the entire device keel over and die.
