Wunderground wind speed and graphs don't work ** solved **

Why did my wunderground wind speed and wind gust become the same exact number for every wunderground upload?

I have a Vantage Pro2 with fan-aspirated ISS.

I updated to 2.6 a few days ago and immediately, the wind speed/gust numbers started to look different. The gust started appearing as one long bar throughout the whole day. Then today, gust and speed just became the same number for every upload.

This meteohub system is very confusing and doesn't seem to work very reliably, which sort of defeats the purpose of weather logging. I could just fabricate numbers if I wanted them to be wrong.

First I couldn't get the dashboard to work, then, after "save and restart data logging" on the sensors (why wasn't this automatic?) the dashboard works sortof, but the graphs are still bunk...!?

I'm starting to wonder about the quality of all of the data being sent from this thing.

It would be one thing if this was free software, but I paid money for it, and it really shouldn't be this involved to get some data published to the internet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

1) wind and gust:
Meteohub reports thre wind speed related values to WU
a) windspeedmph: that is what the vantage reports at position 14 in the loop packet (actual wind speed)
b) windspdmph_avg2: that is what the vantage reports as 10 min average wind speed at position 15 in the loop packet. 2mins and 10mins don't fit too well but WU does not accept 10min average wind data and the 10min values shouldn't be too far away from the 10min ones. BTW, I have never seen WU making use of this number.
c) windgustmph: This is the maximum windgust seen in the last 60 mins. Meteohub takes the vantage wind speed readings (position 14) and reports the maximum of the last 60 minutes.

If you post your WU Id we would have a chance to see what your problem exactly is.

2) Dashboard: What means "working sortof"? Hard to understand/help without details.

3) Graphs: Again, we would like to help, but need detail.

When you are tired of describing problems in detail, please at least give me a chance to login to your system to see what is going wrong with your graphs. pm to "info(at)meteohub.de" is welcome.

Sorry to hear that you don't like it so far :(

The graphs do look different on Wunderground (station KLAALEXA5) but I think it's actually a change for the better. It looks like the actual wind speeds are much more sensitive and better reflect the actual conditions, where the gusts are over a longer period of time.

Chris, I understand your issues with the software, as I have the same setup you do. However, Meteohub is a work-in-progress, and Boris is more than happy to work with you to figure out what's going on and if there's a problem, how to fix it. He has been very receptive with my Davis issues, including fixing a tough-to-find wind speed rounding bug earlier, and also getting solar radiation and UV intensity up and working.

Let me know if there's anything that I can help you with, since we have nearly the same setup.

Cheers,
Branson

I agree that the new wind speed reports to Weather Underground look better, although I'm not sure that a 60 minute window for gusts is the appropriate measure.

For instance, the US National Weather Service uses only a two-minute interval for their gust forecasts.

In my opinion two minutes is probably too short of an average for a personal station in a sub-optimal location, but because high gusts are often associated with fast-moving storms maybe a shorter interval is more appropriate for that measurement, in order to improve the plateau effect now seen on the gust charts at WU? (For instance, looking at the graphs for my station, windy conditions appear to occur in ~20 minute spurts.)

(Edit: oops, pasted the wrong link in for the NWS wind gust reference! Now fixed.)

The WU id is IGREATEX4

The wind problem seems to have solved itself. You can look at today, which seems correct, and yesterday, which I know is wrong. The weather and wind were basically the same both days.

Maybe WU fixed something, I dunno.

As far as the dashboard, it seems to work now. This morning I stopped data logging, cleared data, and restarted, then re-save on the sensor page. Now the dashboard works again. However, I already did this all once before, and then the "this hour" went blank, then "last 60 mintes" went blank later on.

The graphs are working again now as well. Obviously the data logging and recomputing is the source of both problems. Unfortunately, it seems to randomly occur. I'll keep an eye out and post more information when it happens again.

One thing I noticed is that the slug has had its power pulled overnight for about a week between 1:30am and 5am. It's a long story, but essentially, the power must be off during that time every night for the next few months. Could that have caused this issue?

Sorry I sounded so frustrated. I just felt like I was doing that "save and restart data logging" thing over and over.

I'm actually not that clueless, I've lots of programming over the years, but maybe that makes it harder for me when I am dealing with a work-in-progress.

Thanks for the replies.

Chris
