mr3020 failing to load meteobridge image

Hi,
After several years of fault free operation our ethernet connected mr3020 (v1) has failed to load following a power fail. It's stuck in fast flash mode.
I'm really confused because everything appears good. From our lan devices we can access the internet fine.
I can access the meteobridge device landing page across the ethernet lan and all the network vital signs look good. It has a local lan dhcp ip address, and the correct addresses for the dns and gateway. There are plenty of packets coming and going. What's more I can access openwrt from the landing page and using the network tools ping and tracert to the meteobridge.com servers proving that the internet is accessible from the hardware. Yet it stubbornly won't load the main image.
The only two potential issues I've picked up so far:
1. The flashed image is V1.4 and I see V1.5 is now latest.
2. My update support period expired two weeks ago. This is probably the first boot since then. (we will renew support as soon as able).
Could either of these issues be preventing the MB image download?
Is there any way to trace or log the MB image load process? I see in the "Boot sequence" page it talks about holding the button in until the first flash will cause logging to be written to an available FAT Usb drive. Will this log cover the MB image download process? And secondly, when exactly do you push the button for the one flash hold? At first boot?, once it gets to the fast flash stage? It's very tricky to time the button press during fast flash to only one flash.
Any ideas or thoughts to diagnose or remedy appreciated.
Steve
