MB-Pro internal 1 GB USB storage

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have an MB-Pro. My current problem, the internal 1GB memory is 97% full. I read in the tutorial that a backup to an external USB memory is possible.
Does this mean that the files disappear from the internal memory and there is space again?
Or how should I proceed to make room for new data?
I have an 8-16 and 32 GB USB2 stick, can I also use the big one?
Thanks for any help

The MB-Pro recognized the 32GB USB 2 stick and made a backup.
backup (18.01.2023 22:27:14): backup media size is 28.9G (28.9G free).
backup (18.01.2023 22:31:44): backup completed: dbase-202301182227 (811.8M)
Apparently the MB-Pro saves the accumulating data on the internal memory until only about 30MB are free and then deletes old data, is that correct?
I can't find any information about it.
Thanks for any info.

Have no background on the deletion of old data but is that 32GB USB stick consumer grade or Industrial grade? If consumer grade it will not have a very long life.

Why, a backup is not made every day, is it? I have old USB sticks that are 10 years old and still work, doesn't it matter how often you use them?
Or do you mean the following setting: System>Administration>Database medium and then instead of internal USB memory, which is standard, select USB memory front panel? Then, of course, he has more to do.
Do you use this setting?

Ok I read your actions wrong, thought you were changing out the 1GB stick that was 97% full? Don't have an answer either as have never had to create backups, admittedly I have 1, 4 & 8GB USB in different station but I have around 8 years on the 8GB and it is currently 4% used and room for 589.9 years so you must be doing an awful lot more writing/saving of data?

What you write is still interesting to me. I understand that about the backup, it works.
You obviously store a lot less data than I do. In the settings > system "section database" I have selected "data per minute" > storage of all data 35. You probably have a lot less?
On my 1GB internal memory, which is full, there is data from about 1 and 1/2 years, is that possible or am I wrong?
The next selection point after >system "section database" is yes, >automatic deletion after 1/2 or 1 year...
only then is this data probably gone and of course the display over several years too.
Do you have a larger internal storage installed?
I'm sorry if I'm annoying, but I can't find an answer in the tutorial.

@Mora, There are probably many different approaches and many different options to how users run their devices. As mentioned I have units with 1, 4 & 8GB ATP NANO DURA USB's, I really don't have a storage need for 8Gb but I had some so I used them. For my purpose 1GB 's are fine, yes I store 1 minute data daily but use the device more as a server rather than a long term storage device. My long term storage is external to the unit and really don't have much need to use the device stored data, it's just a different approach, more about data management and external use rather than local device data storage and internal use.

Thanks for the information. The 8 GB ATP NANO DURA industrial version 43€. Can be used for at least 10 years.
My internal memory only has 22 Mb of space left. I still don't know how to delete old data?
I activated "automatically delete after 30 days" under System>Administration. But didn't free up any disk space.
How do I delete data?
Can you simply select the external USB stick as the database medium under System? And MB-Pro creates a new database on the stick?

No exposure to what you are doing so any answers are only my thoughts.
How long ago did you trigger the "automated deletion past 30 days"? I assume you would have hit [Save and Apply] after changing the setting? I might have done a Reboot as well?
Depending on when you set the 30 day value, maybe the 30 days trigger begins from the time the 30 days was set?
You could change the [Administration>Maintenance] Database Media from "Internal USB Storage" to "USB Stick on front panel" once a USB stick was inserted in the front panel, I can only assume a new database would be created???? Something I have not tried.
Have you read the PRO_Tutorial? Doing Data Backups & restore sections? There is a reference in that regard when capacity is filled etc You could also do a backup to a front USB, upgrade internal with a bigger USB then Restore from front USB.
Maybe I should do some experimenting of things I have not had a need to do?

When you want to connect the 8 GB USB stick externally as your database location and keep on using the so-far accumulated data, you have to do a few things:
a) create a backup of your database (USB front panel)
b) insert the 8 GB USB into the behind USB port
c) in the System/Administration page select in the Maintenance section Database media "USB from back panel"
d) reboot
e) restore your database from the last backup (Restore database from) - from your front panel USB database backup
that's it
your old database will remain on the 1 GB internal USB until you delete it
(for deletion log in to your MB Pro via SSH - go to /tmp/mnt - rm dbase* )

Next to the setting to force "1 minute permanent data storage" there is also a setting to drop the 1 minute data after a certain time. Doing so will dramatically reduce you storage footprint. This is my recommendation instead of mounting a bigger NANODURA stick internally, which works but you can also easily break something.
New MBPRO2 version is equipped with 16GB of permanent storage.

Unfortunately, it took a very long time until I got the new USB.
I have now installed a 16GB NANDDURA USB stick internally. He also creates a database, but when restoring or backing up the stored data MB reports:
Database Error: Cannot prepare read tables (0 tries, 64ms): database disk image is malformed
I formatted with ext4.
How do I format?

the malformed image is not (yet) on your internal USB - it is on your external USB.
The external USB should be formatted with FAT32.
But malformed usually means that something went wrong with the backup file - not with the USB stick.
You can still copy the database from the old 1 GB USB stick to your internal new USB stick.
a) either mount it (the 1 GB stick) into the MB file system, delete /tmp/mnt/dbase * on the internal stick and copy the dbase files (all files whose names start with dbase) via SSH from the 1 GB stick into /tmp/mnt - then reboot
or
b) connect the 1 GB to your PC, the backup-USB stick too
format the backup USB stick with FAT32
copy the dbase file (that's its name: dbase) from the 1 GB stick to the backup-USB
rename it to dbase-202303030000 (any time stamp of that format) for the backup program to recognize it and you to choose it inside MB
do the restore from within the MB interface
or
c) try to save the database backup from the backup USB to your harddisk - format the USB stick (backup stick) with FAT32 - copy the backup file back from the disk to the USB stick and try the restore again - but I think the issue is not with the format but with the file itself - got probably somehow corrupted
but it's worth a try
if neither seems to work (or you cannot access or find the dabse files on the old 1 GB stick), you can still put the old 1 GB USB back into MB - start MB again with the old stick - make one or two backups on an eternal USB (FAT32 formatted) - save copies from the external USB to your hard disk - re-insert the new internal USB and try the do the retore again
but that's a bit more work

Well, replacing the stick yourself is not a default use case. There is no need to format the stick, Meteobridge does that itself with the needed parameters to reduce wear etc which you don't know about.
When you give me a remote login, I can have a look what is screwed up. Please send credentials to "info(at)meteobridge.com".

I just wanted to get in touch and everything is fine.
The 16GB stick was recognized and the data from the 1GB stick is now on it.
Many thanks to @Gyvate for the extensive and helpful explanation.
And also to the @admin, no help was needed at the moment, but the MB-pro is really a great little machine.
