NSLU 2 first steps

Hello everybody,
so first post and as usual first questions.
I already have the NSLU2 and also installed the special firmware. I am only waiting for the USB image file (I cant download over mobile network - too slowly).
I have some operation questions (please do not send me to the manual - I am fighting with it!).
So the idea is:
I want to store the environmental data (meteo) captured with my Nexus but everything over closed network (no access to Internet). The read-out process will happen from time to time lets say 1-3 times/week (depending on the weather conditions - if is cloudless than maybe daily)
The data will be used together with the astronomical information stored in the observatory laptop (telescope pointing, camera temp, exposures, etc), also later (this year) will be installed a cloud sensor from Lunatico.
I am very interested to have some feed-back especially from those that are running a similar set-up as mine.
Point 1. Meteohub can store the date, nice and fine, how can I access this data?
Point 2. Is there some free alternative software to WeatherDisplay (momentarily am running out of ammo (money) or is some short term solution till I can arrange a new "hold-up" at the local bank?
So hopefully someone will manage to "show me the way".
Until than
Clear skies
