Problem setting up new USB stick for NSLU2

I want to get a new USB stick running, as my old one (running Meteohub 4.6) is suffering from data corruption, but I am unable to get a new Meteohub image running. My system is an NSLU2 running Linux kernel 2.6.21.7 and Windows 7 64-bit, and I have followed the steps in section 1.1.3 (Windows method) of the Meteohub manual:

1. Downloaded meteohub-v4.6i-4GB.rar from the Meteohub website – all OK.
2. Extracted the rar to a dd image, using 7-zip – all OK.
3. Written the dd image to a 4GB USB, using Roadkil DiskImage 1.6 – all OK.
4. Re-booted the NSLU2 , using the 4GB USB – not OK (see below).

On power up, the NSLU2 seems unable to run the USB program. After the flashing yellow LED stage of power up it emits three beeps: 2 high and one medium tone. No IP address tones follow, and Meteohub can not be reached at http://192.168.1.77/.

My current USB stick does not make the high-high-medium tones sound on boot up, and ends by beeping the IP tones.

Can anyone help? I have tried two different brand-new USB sticks. Have I followed the right steps? Is the v4.6i-4GB image confirmed as working? Are 7-zip and DiskImage 1.6 confirmed as OK for this task?

Any help gratefully received. Many thanks.

Mark.

Error #1 is to use diskimage not in "physical disk" mode. You have to scroll down the list of target devices until you can select these as "physical disk".

Thank you. I see that in the instructions now - sorry I didn't get that.

However, both my USB sticks give an error straight away when I do this: Error #5 occurred while writing to disk at sector 0. Have you heard of this issue before?

are you using vista? XP and WIN7 should work ok.

No, Windows 7 64-bit. I googled it and someone else got the same error using Win 7-64. I've got an old XP computer, so I'll try that and report back.

It worked fine on Windows XP. Must be a problem with Win 7 64 bit; I'll send Roadkil a message.

Meteohub back up and running. Thanks for your help.

Sorry for my english. After searching for a while in this forum for a problem similar to the problem that I have, I found this topic. My problem is similar, but with some differences.

After a power surge (not failure), I manually turned on my NSLU2. But, this time, I heard not the normal bips but an anormal bips. Since 2 years until now, I didn't had any problems with my pen drive (Kingston Data Traveler 4GB). Over these 2 years, after some normal power failures, I had always normal restarts with the normal bips and meteohub started always immediately data send with no errors, etc... Until 3 days ago...

As I was saying, this time, I had a power failure and after turning on the NSLU2 I heard anormal bips, louder than normal. After the 3 bips that the user markhiseman refers, the Ready/Status LED stays green and doesn't blink. Pen drive LED's indicates that it is normal operating, blinking everytime (who have Kingston pen drives know what I'm saying).

After all this, nothing more happens, I can't access the pen drive by the meteohub default IP, it says that "Server not found" (that error that you have when you can't access a website) and no more data was uploaded since then.

Because I have always data backups, I decided to disconnect everything from NSLU2 (weather station, Ethernet cable and pen drive) and introduced the pen drive in my computer. I've been successfully formated it in FAT32. But, one strange thing happened: after formating the pen drive, I only had 417 megabytes of total space. Pen drive have 4GB (in the last time that I've saw meteohub software, the filled space on the pen drive was something around 619mb of 3810mb).

Continuing... I have formated the pen drive and then followed the steps in section 1.1.3 of meteohub manual. But I think I did something wrong:

- I downloaded the meteohub-v4.7-4GB.rar (that you can found on Images Section, here: http://wiki.meteohub.de/Images). I downloaded the file named "compressed 4GB USB stick image (Version 4.7)" in NSLU2 part.
- Then, I've copied this file, not extracted, to other pen drive with 1GB.
- I've introduced this pen drive (with 1GB) in disk 1 slot, and turned on NSLU2. When the disk 2 LED started to blink, I introduced the 4GB pen drive (the same that I have now, it's not a new one) and NSLU2 started to copy the file from one pen to another. After around 20 minutes it turned off by itself.
- Then, I connected weather station to NSLU2 and ethernet cable too, and turned on NSLU2. The rest of the problem is described above (the bips, etc...).

Later, I've read the 1.1.3 Meteohub Manual section again and saw that I must write image to the pen drive, and not just copy the .RAR file to it. Yes, I know, it's my mistake, the first time ever that I worked with meteohub, the only steps that were necessary were the same steps that I described above.

I have 3 questions:

1 - I don't know if pen drive that I have now (4GB Kingston Data Traveler) is instable or out of use, I would like to know if the number that appeared to me (417 megabytes) when I've formated it is normal? I'm asking this because in the past I had a few data errors from precipitation and wind, and, in some cases, Meteohub software stayed around 60 days without rebooting the NSLU2 and with swap load at 100%. Really, I think that this pen drive is starting to have some problems... I'm thinking about buying a TRANSCEND FLASH DRIVE 4GB V60 (with a good value for the money).

2 - So, this time, (correct me If I'm wrong please), I must follow these steps?:
- Introduce the new pen drive in computer.
- Download the image file "compressed 4GB USB stick image (Version 4.7)" and extract it with 7-ZIP.
- Use Roadkil (note that I have Windows 7 with 64-bits architecture) program and follow all the steps that are described in Meteohub Manual, section 1.1.3.
- With NSLU2 turned off, connect the pen drive, weather station and Ethernet cable and only then turn on NSLU2.
- Wait for a normal restart and then access to Meteohub.

3 - What's the risk of happening the same again (have the same problems but with the new pen drive after power failures)? What can I do to prevent this from happen again? Can I do something? Buy an equipment that protect the NSLU2 against power surges?

Help gratefully received.
Thanks for your attention,

Joe

did you use "raw disk" mode when selecting your usb stick in diskimage? this is 90% of the errors when setting up a usb stick for meteohub.

I don't even used the diskimage program, I think my problem was that, because I said so in my previous post. In other words, I skipped that part.

I'm a bit confused. I was very grateful if you can explain better for other words what must I have to do.

Regards
Joe
