MR3020/WR703N Openwrt USB 1.1 Disconnect Problem **solved**

FYI...

It looks like the devs at openwrt.org have finally cracked the nut on the Tp-Link MR-3020/WR-703N USB 1.1 disconnect problem.

See these posts here at openwrt.org:

https://dev.openwrt.org/changeset/39212
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=39956&p=10

So any OpenWrt kernel version 39212 or newer should no longer fail to work with USB 1.1 devices on this hardware!

Maybe Boris will update the meteobridge (and meteoplug) firmware to use the fixed Openwrt version and then everybody wouldn't have to use cheap USB hubs all the time?

I tried the changes a few months ago and they were NOT effective.
May be just something with the back porting of the code went wrong,
but it didn't show the expected results.

If you can get meteobridge/meteohub running on OpenWrt AA 12.09 r36088 (which is the latest stable release) it would be simple to try this patch and see how it works:

I managed to backport the USB fix to the Meteobridge firmware. Right now I just did it for the TP-Link MR3020, which is the most used Meteobridge unit and also the one Ambientweather is reselling as Weatherbridge in the US. If you have a MR3020 and want to get rid of the USB hub, please follow the description given here.

If you don't feel comfortable reflashing firmware at your own risk, just stay with the USB hub and accept to have this tiny piece of hardware also in the equation. When you also have a USB stick connected to the MR3020, you will need a USB hub anyway.

The new firmware has been tested a day and seems to completely solve the USB issue. I guess in a few days we will have more user reports if it is working fine. So for the moment, please regard this as still being somehow experimental.

My TP-Link TL-MR3020 v1 no longer recognizes the Acurite: 1025/1035/1525 (use "USB Mode 3") with or without the usb hub. It appears the 3020 doesn't like to boot without the hub and the station connected;

logger (23.03.2014 22:22:25): Historical data loaded (15 records).
logger (23.03.2014 22:22:25): data logger (version 4.9w, build 3516) started.
logger (23.03.2014 22:22:25): error while doing bind (port 5551): Address already in use
logger (23.03.2014 22:22:26): data logger stopped.

I didn't try with Acurite. May be it still needs the HUB. It works from my tests well without the hub for stations connected via USB serial, may be the USB hid devices still need the hub. Thanks for testing!

I did some more testing and it looks like USB HID devices like Acurite, Oregon wmr 100/200 do still need the hub.

Would be interesting to see if original USB Vantage logger does also work without USB hub. Unfortunately, I just have 3rd party loggers for my Vantage.

It looks like the Ambient Weather WS-2090 still needs the USB also. I assume that all of the Fine Offset (Ambient Weather) weather stations will still need the USB hub. :(

yes, all USB HID devices.
