Edimax wireless nano usb adapter and SD card question.

Hi to the Forum!
I now have my Pi and will be picking up an SD card next week. I see there is a minimum size of 4GB card recommended, best being 16 GB but where size is concerned is it the case of the bigger the better?
I was looking at the 16 GB but I see people are now using up to 128GB with the Pi. What would be best?
Second, my Pi came with an Edimax wireless Nano adapter. Will this work with Meteohub if it is inserted before the system is booted for the first time? I see that there are options in the programs setup menu but does the WLAN only work with certain adapters?
Would be most grateful for any pointers!
Most Kindest Regards,
Andrew Hall.

4GB will only leave 2GB for data logging which will last 2-3 years or so. But I recommend not to go beyond 8GB, 16GB is fine headroom and my choice, more is wasted money imho and the very big and not so common ones also have increased risk that the RPI bootloader can't boot them.
Just give the nano a try. When you are lucky it will work immediately, otherwise it might need to install a driver packet via "apt-get install xyz" from ssh login. If you are completely out of luck that won't do and you have to spend another 8 Euro for a Meteohub tested USB WLAN adapter.
P.S.: Googled a bit and if it is the Edimax EW-7811Un with the RTL8188UCS chipset, then you should be lucky with it working out of the box (when documentation of raspbian is not tricking me)

Here you find some more reading on the WLAN topic. Meteohub is based on a up-to-date (May 2014) Raspbian Wheezy, so the statements in the article should be true for Meteohub:
http://www.element14.com/community/docs ... er-testing
As the article is a bit outdated, all sticks mentioned there as being compatible should still be work with recent raspbian versions.

Hi Admin,
Many thanks for coming back to me so quickly.
I am in luck and have the Edimax EW-7811UN (V1.0A) so when I get up and running I will let you know how it goes!
Like you said if it comes to it I will just get an approved wireless stick for Meteohub.
With regard to the SD card I will look for a 16Gb and will most likely get an 8Gb as a fall back. What is with regard to the "class" of the card?
I have read that the class 10 cards are not that important where the Pi is concerned! What is your recommendation?
Most grateful for the help.
Most Kindest Regards,
Andrew.

My ultimate recommendation would be an industrial SD card with SLC chips form Transcend, but those are above 50 Euro in sizes of 8 GB and I guess it is hard to convince someone to buy an SD card costing more then the whole RPI
SLC has abt 10 times the write cycles before the cells wear out compared to MLC, so you should have a decade of hasslefree use. If the consumer MLC cards do last a decade on steady write operations, I have doubts... What helps with the MLC cards is having them a bit oversized as this allows the wear leveling algorithms to better spread writes over the card. I would assume a 16GB card having double the endurance of a 8 GB card at the same usage pattern.
Regarding speed classes, I woulg go with class 10 as the price difference is not too big and I hate waiting for putting the imgae onto the cards too long. If it has a noticeable performance plus compared to class 6, I don't know. But when I look at the prices being rather nearby, I decided for the class 10.
What I recommend is taking the card of a well reputated company like Transcend, as it is very important that the internal wear leveleing is done in a clever and reliable way. When you take no-names the risk of early flash wear out increases caused by low quality cells or poor wear leveling algorithms.
As you see, quite some might-could-voodoo here, but I wanted to share my thinking on SD cards, as these are troubleing me for quite some years.

Many thanks!
Was looking at SanDisk but will of course look at Transcend! Was intending to look for a brand name anyway!
I have downloaded the "trial" image to run and will post again when it is up and running. (Hopefully over the weekend all been well with other commitments!)
Appreciate the help with your experience!

Andrew.

Hi Admin,
I have things up and running but no joy with the Edimax wireless adapter! I followed all your advice from the previous post but no luck!
Is there a list of approved wireless adapters for Meteohub that "will" work out of the box with the Raspberry Pi installation of Meteohub?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Most Kindest Regards,
Andrew.

As a sub note, I was able to load the driver via SSH which now load every time the system boots.
Still no joy with connecting via wireless yet though. The strange thing is that my router has added the mac address from the wireless device.
I have a little understanding of Linux but I have tried all I know and what seemed applicable from the internet.
I wondered about TKIP/AES. My router supports both.
Please advise if poss!

Andrew.

Just an up date!
Finally got the adapter working.
Much to my annoyance it was a very simple thing. It was all down to the fact
that My SSID was hidden!!!!
After showing the network the Pi connected straight away to the router and I
was able to connect to the Pi via the wireless connection!
Just as a thought, maybe in a later release it would be possible to put in a
tick box on the network page for hidden networks. I believe it is just one
line of code to be added to the ”/etc/network/interfaces” file.

Thanks for the update. Will check this for future updates and your finding is anyway good to know for other Meteohub users out there.

Hi Admin,
I did drop you an email a few days ago about it, hope you received it ok?
I am glad it is working too as I just think the software is outstanding!
When I have anything else useful for other members I will be sure to post here on the forum!
Many thanks again for your help and advice.
Regards,
Andrew.
