Planning transfer from X86 to RP (Success)

Hello, I have been using VMWare running on a eeePC for my Meteohub system for a few years, however gradually the old eeePC is starting to fail, the power supply and the battery have already been replaced, and the power supply is broken again, so I need to look at an alternative. I have managed to backup my meteohub data and config OK.

My first thought was to use another PC laptop that I have, which runs Windows 7, but it has annoying habits of losing the WiFi connection every few days and needs a reboot each time that happens, so that is not a good system for a weather station.

My question is, how easy would it be to migrate to the RP? I only have WiFi access in the room where my weather console will be, no Ethernet.

Can the Meteohub SD card only run Meteohub? - I also have a webcam which currently runs FSWebcam software on Linux, can I run that as well as Meteohub on RP?

Can I set the RP completely from start to finish without a keyboard and mouse and display, by logging in remotely over the WiFi network via SSH, or do I need to have those peripherals to set things up initially?

I am trying to decide what exactly I need besides the RP, a power supply, an SD Card, a WiFi USB dongle and a case.

Thanking you in advance,

David

RPI can be used and installed headless (no keyboard, no monitor).

Data migration between Meteohub platforms is described here:

Thank you.

I received the RPi today and have it working fine. Migrated data across and connecting via WiFi.

I am using a class 10 16GB SD Card. My data is 1416MB in size and the Weather Data Recomputation is taking a long time (much slower than EeePC). It is only 2 dots so far after 2 hours.

Would you recommend an automatic restart every day or not? (I did this with previous system because of some problems from time to time).

Do you know if I can install FSWebcam on the RPi and run it with Meteohub? - That is the only thing I am missing from my previous EeePC X86 system.

Thanks again.

David

Meteohub does not support webcams on RPI.

Daily reboots should not be necessary.

Thanks, regarding webcams, I understand that meteohub does not support webcams, but my question is can I install the software fswebcam and use that alongside meteohub on the RPi? .

OK fair enough - my question was more is it permitted rather than have you tried this. I will let you know if I can get fswebcam to work or not. (It worked very well on eeePC).

The rule with installations you do yourself on top of Meteohub is, that you are of course free to do so,
but I will not trouble shoot problems (Meteohub related or not) on modified systems. So you are on your own.

Just to say that fswebcam is working well with Meteohub on RPi.
Used a powered hub for the webcam.

Now I can retire my old EEEPC. :D
