Yes - that's the way I looked at it. It *would* have been interesting - but not interesting enough to risk destroying the second NANO when a replacement would certainly not have been forthcoming a second time

Just a follow up with the end of the story...

I purchased a new Vantage Pro2 console. The original Nano exhibited the same behavior in the new console - which is to say no data received.

I acquired a new Nano and installed it in the new console. (I left the console unplugged and without batteries ...

I gather that getting access to an updater is virtually impossible. I did check eBay, just in case, but no joy. I'm guessing that the very painful answer - at least to my wallet - is to bite the bullet and buy a new console. Or give up on the whole project for now.

The console version is May 27 2005 - which apparently is prior the the introduction of version numbers.

The Vantage Pro2 is old - on the order of 10 years. It's connected to its sensors correctly and I can see current data on the console.
