Meteohub installation problem with ebox

Post by hopi »

I cannot install the latest meteohub application on a new DMP xbox 3300 with ubuntu installed.
I followed the installation instruction and when I boot from the USB stick I receive the following error messages:

Extract and install Meteohub x86 Image (will take some minutes)….
zcat: error inflating
0+2211 records in
0+2211 records out
ebox 3300 detected. mount: mounting /dev/hda1 on /eboxmnt failed: No such file or directory

(process: 979): INFO kbd-mode: setting console modueto Unicode (UTF-8)
Setup Meteohub...
done
probing partitions… done
major minor #blocks name
8 0 7913472 sda
3 0 7782400 hda
Mount USB stick as /dev/sda.

…. this messages will be endless repeated with always a new process number nnnn...

(process: nnnn): INFO kbd-mode: setting console modueto Unicode (UTF-8)
Setup Meteohub...
done
probing partitions… done
major minor #blocks name
8 0 7913472 sda
3 0 7782400 hda
Mount USB stick as /dev/sda.

The only difference I could figure out in the BIOS setting compared to the wiki instruction. Primary IDE MASTER has the option (Hard Disk) instead of Secondary IDE MASTER. However changing this setup is disabled.

Thanks in advance for any help

Sorry for the late reply, was on travel for some days.
I purchased the ebox personally and directly from the manufacture Northtec in Thailand (during my last business trip on 26th of March this year).

The official model number is MCJr MX with 2 RS232 ports, opt HDD, auto Power ON, USB, WiFi, SD card slot
The model has no HDD installed but Ubuntu on the 8GB SD card.

The link of the purchased product

Looks like it has an new - but meteohub incompatible - processor manufactured
1Ghz Xcore86 CPU (x586 CPU with MMX compatible extensions)

If this is the case I am really disappointed as I bought this hardware ONLY for the meteohub software!

And by the way it is nowhere mentioned in the meteohub wiki that the latest Northec hardware is not compatible with the meteohub software

Let´s wait what Boris will say, but the hardware chart clearly mentioning the
Vortex CPU and the VIA Eden ULV as only supported platforms.
x86 system based on Via Eden ULV precessor (486 compatible), 500 MHZ, 1000 BogoMIPS, 512 MB RAM.
x86 system based on Vortex86DX processor (486 compatible), 1000 MHZ, 2000 BogoMIPS, 256 MB RAM

So either Boris is on travel or this subject shall fall silent.

I do not agree with the statement it is CLEARLY mentioned. This is a cheap excuse. The model I bought has a x86 system and the meteohub software shall be compatible with this system. I mean what kind of software shall this be, some program which runs only on old obsolete machines? On computers which are not build any more? I cannot believe that this is the sales promotion of meteohub.

If the software is not running on the latest ebox computers from northec then it shall be explicitly mentioned somewhere.
What happens to softwares on PC's and Mac's if a new processor of the same system family is brought into the market? Do I have to buy a new software!?? So is meteohub a serious software product or not?

I have an ebox 3300MX here, which I can install Meteohub on without problems. I just tried again with 4.9 image, because I have not worked with it for quite some time. It works.

Please try the following:
0) setup USB stick again. Messages tell you that the file to be installed from is damaged, it can't work that way
1) check in BIOS that on PCI PnP page PCI IDE BusMaster is enabled, after successfull install message press a key, wait a second and then turn down system via ctrl-alt-del
2) get rid of the ubuntu SD card and get one of the recommended 4GB ones.
3) Then try again...

No space left on device

I have done as described, but still I can't install meteohub on the SD card.

I bought a SanDisk Extreme III 4GB SD card. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (it works). Prepared an USB stick with the meteohub image and checked the BIOS successfully.
Upon booting from USB the following log appears:

Loading linux……………….
Loading initrd.gz……………
………………..……..ready
CPU: Vendor unknown, using generic init.
CPU: Your system may be unstable.
ACPI: Unable to load the System Description Tables
Starting system log daemon: syslogd, klogd.

(process:882): INFO: kbd-mode: setting console mode to Unicode (UTF-8)
Setup Meteohub…
load generic ide kernel module… done
probing partitions… done
major minor #blocks name
8 0 985600 sda
3 0 3872256 hda
Mount USB stick as /dev/sda.
Meteohub Image found: meteohub-x86-4GB.gz
Target drive: /dev/hda
Extract and install Metehub x86 Image (will take some minutes)...

(after about 30 seconds the next message appears)
dd: writing '/dev/hda': No space left on device
0+8047 records in
0+8046 records out
(process:936): INFO: kbd-mode: setting console mode to Unicode (UTF-8)

Setup Meteohub…
done
probing partitions… done
major minor #blocks name
8 0 985600 sda
3 0 3872256 hda
Mount USB stick as /dev/sda.
(process:987): INFO: kbd-mode: setting console mode to Unicode (UTF-8)

Setup Meteohub…

and so on and so on

I have tried several USB sticks, 1GB, 4GB and 8GB always the same message "No space left on device. The 4GB SD card works fine with Ubuntu, so the SD card should not be the problem.

Is probably the SUSE Studio Image Writer the problem? I use it under Win XP with Parallels Desktop. But the process finishes successfully without error and the USB content looks ok for me.
And I used this image http://www.meteohub.de/files/meteohub-v4.9.zip

This time the USB stick behaves as expected, no messages about a corrupted archive.
Writing to the SD card does fail.

Did you check that the switch of the SD card is not set to "locked"?

Definitely not locked - visually checked and when I start Ubuntu on this SD card I can write, copy, delete files, so the SD card seems to be ok.

What about username and pwd at Ubuntu, any requirements for the meteohub installation?

Meteohub puts a complete new Linux distribution onto the card by low level writes, so nothing of the content on it will be used.
Please try to erase the partition table of the card by a linux system via "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx bs=1M count =100" where sdx is the device the card received when plugged in (check "dmesg" to find out).

If that also is no cure, please try a 4GB SD card as mentioned here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7648

I was successful in the installation of this newer version of the 3300 (with the newer processor and SD rather than CF).

The installation differs from the online instructions in 2 significant ways:
1a) In the BIOS, Advanced/IDE Configuration set the IDE compatibility to Enabled.
1b) During installation you will NOW see lots of write activity to the SD reflected by the lower of the 2 LEDs.
1c) When the installation stops, and you start to get the repeated messages

"Setup Meteohub…
done
probing partitions… done
major minor #blocks name
8 0 985600 sda
3 0 3872256 hda
Mount USB stick as /dev/sda.
(process:987): INFO: kbd-mode: setting console mode to Unicode (UTF-8)"

and on and on ...

2) Then power off, pull the USB stick, and power on.

It will then boot correctly to Meteohub.
