ALIX3D2 wireless not working

Post by brianeh »

I have been having chronic issues with my eBox3300 so I am installing an ALIDX3D2 image today.

All went flawless except for the wireless.
I have the exact wireless card mentioned in the instructions with b/g support. But meteohub does not report the WLAM MAC nor does it get an IP.

I am at a loss as to where to go.

I would really love to get the wireless working properly so I can move my station to a more useful location.

Is there something that I have to do at the command line?

---
The exact model is the WLM54AGP23

lspci displays it as:
00:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006X 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)

So I know it is recognized.
----
I have found some mentions of needing madwifi or the ath5k driver.
And only one thread in these forums with no real detail how to solve the issue.
Anyone?

----
I have attempted to update the kernel but aptitude update simply fails not able to find the files.

-----
it appears that this is a kernel issue from the searching I have done. The Alix build is 2.6.24 and it appears the card needs 2.6.27 or greater.
it would be great if the kernel was updated as the original card in the wiki instructions is no longer available, and this card (the replacement) is not supported in the antique kernel that the build uses.

Something does not align then.

Here is my system:

meteohub@meteohub:~$ uname -r
2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486

meteohub@meteohub:~$ cat /etc/debian_version
4.0
xor

update your system and install a new kernel.
I'm not sure that it will be easy to do on the main section is very little space.
here's a little guide as I did.
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=8249 # p9287
warning: update instructions may be out of date and incomplete,

read more instructions on updating etch to lenny!

Nope. I did not succeed.
I gave up on the wireless and decided for the Meteohub folks to update the kernel.

All the instructions I had, I followed, but there were too many little things that kept causing problems and one big thing - you can't access the distro online any longer though the http update URL. That was a big hitch that kept causing problems.
(therefore, be sure to protect your server on the network)
I have built Linux kernels before, but as I have learned, if you don't know everything about the build and you are working with someone else's build, there are always problems.

I am running wired instead (but would really like to have my base station someplace else in the house).
