Access your Meteobridge Web Interface from the Internet

Over time many have asked how to access the Meteobridge from the Internet without the need to change router/firewall configurations, which is a true pain for the non-it-pro and in certain environments (company networks) not possible at all.

With the latest update we now have a solution for that. You simply set a mark on the "system" tab of your Meteobridge, that you want to have it accessed from the Internet and store the associated Link somewhere to make use of it when you are outside of your LAN's reach. It hardly can be any more simple.

For the tech guys... When told so the Meteobridge opens a SSH tunnel to a gateway server in the Internet. When you connect to your Meteobridge with the given link, you reach out via HTTPS to this gateway server which redirects the traffic to the SSH tunnel your Meteobridge has established. Traffic between your browser and the gateway server is SSL encoded and traffic through the SSH tunnel from the gateway server to your Meteobridge is also encrypted by SHH services. Gateway server is managed by smartbedded UG, who also does the Meteobridge development. When you unmark the switch in your Meteobridge, no SSH tunnel is established. To make use of the tunnel you still need your individual Meteobridge HTTP password. The URL to the gateway server is individual for each Meteobridge and looks like this (non-working example just for illustration):

The previous option to give smartbedded UG exclusive access has been dropped in favor to this more generic solution. I think this brings remote accessibility to a new level of simplicity for the Meteobridge user base.

Very nice feature.

However, I have a little problem. When I connect to admin.meteobridge.com, I get a 502 Proxy Error: Reason: Error reading from remote server
Is there something wrong on the servers or is it my ISP which is blocking this feature (tested with two different providers).

Did you try a reboot? what is your Meteobridges MAC?

Yes, rebooted several times and always waited at least 5 to 10min.
I have the problem on different MB (I have a network)

I tried to login to your mac "10:FE:ED:75:85:A6". Can you please set the password temporarily to "needhelp", so that I can login and check what blocks http traffic?

Maybe because I changed the http port to 8080?

EDIT: I just flashed another MR3020 with Meteobridge. This works with http port set to 80.
Any idea how to swtich back the port to 80 without ssh access?

Sorry, I am a bit puzzled here. You do some tweaking on shell level changing the http port
and then you keep me busy in troubleshooting side effects of this. I am not amused to have my
time wasted like this. Thanks a lot...

Honestly, I am very sorry about that.
But we had to find a workaround before this feature comes out.

I find a way to change the port back to 80.
Maybe you shoould precise that it works only with port 80.

This new feature is great to have. In the past two days I've used it quite successfully to access two different remote weather stations that use Meteobridge on a MR3020.

However, in both cases the Meteobridge quit working later at the next reboot (daily reboot from script). After the daily reboot, the meteobridge application appears to not be loaded, but the openwrt is still running. When I access the web page of the device and log in, it goes to the native router web page (open writ). It does not go to the normal meteobridge web page or the black meteobridge 'landing page'. Clicking 'return to meteobridge' button doesn't do anything.

At that point rebooting makes no change. The only recovery I've found so far is reinstall the meteobridge program as a firmware upgrade to the router (without changing network configuration). Then it acts like a brand new meteobridge and I enter all my station setup information again and then it works like before. The meteobridge license is still there, all I have to do is agree to the license terms again.

Am I missing something or is this just a bug with the new feature sometimes? If it would be helpful I could give you access to the meteobridge when it is in this condition.

As my rig does not behave like that I would like to have access to yours, when it is in that condition.
Access to port 22 should be all I need.

After the latest updates this appears to be solved. Three different stations gave me the same problem earlier, but the latest one that I set up had no problems. Thanks for the updates.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to use this feature to establish remote access to a MB located at a remote site and connected to the internet via a USB 3G modem/TL-MR3220. I consistently get a HTTP Error 503 - Service unavailable error. Several reboots and attempts over several days have not resolved the problem. Is this due to limitations associated with being connected to the internet via a 3G connection i.e. with a private vs public ip address or something else?

I guess it has to do with filtering of your 3G provider.

When you send your link to "infa(at)meteobridge.com" I can have a look at the Meteobridge gateway server, if the tunnel is established at all.
