No data recorded via USB RFXCOM

With meteohub 4.9y on Sheevaplug, after months of trouble free operation, I am suddenly receiving no data via my USB RFXCOM receiver.

The metohub log files report:
logger (26.12.2014 07:51:33): station 0 (RFXCOM), can't open device /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory

Does this suggest a problem with meteohub software or with RFXCOM hardware?

Suggested steps to resolve/diagnose?

I've already tried:

1) Rebooting, from the maintenance page, did not resolve.
2) Unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable, did not resolve.
3) Unplugging, and reconnecting the power lead, did not resolve.

Does it work with your PC? Afaik the RFXCOM modules are delivered with some PC programs to read data.
The error message indicates, that it is not recognized as a serial USB device anymore.
Is there another USB device connected to the Meteohub?

I don't recall receiving any s/w when I got the receiver, but that was over 4 years ago so I could be mistaken.
I'm in discussions with RFXCOM about testing on a PC.
