Trend in wind direction

Post by PWS »

One of our potential users is interested in whether MBP could deliver a trend value for wind direction. This is quite important apparently for sailing and shipping. Really all they need to know is whether the wind direction is veering (changing direction clockwise) or backing (anticlockwise).

Of course there's not much point in simply comparing spot values because individual wind direction values can be quite variable. Instead what's needed is a comparison of eg the current 5-minute average direction with the comparable average value perhaps 30 minutes or 60 minutes ago. (Whereas pressure trends seem to be defined according to some fairly standard rules (eg 3hr trends), I'm not sure that the same is true of direction trends - unless anyone knows different.)

So the question is whether there is some way to define a direction trend in an MBP script? I can't see an easy way of doing it but maybe I'm missing something obvious. I guess that a positive difference in degrees (now - eg 60 mins ago) would be veering and a negative difference would be backing.
