Help! WeatherBridge won't load stack

Post by david.delano »

A few days ago, my WeatherBridge went offline. When I logged into it, I found that it had lost most of it's settings. The network settings were gone, but somehow the device was still connecting to my WiFi. I updated most of the settings again and was at least reporting to Weather Underground again.

Last night, I had to reboot the network and the WeatherBridge did not come back online. I can log into it, so it's on my network, but I have the black landing page, and I can't get past it. I've rebooted several times, and still no go.

1) is the memory on my unit going out? Why do I keep losing settings?
2) is this related to the server outage and are there still issues?

Please help! I am leaving town in a day and need to have this up and running (it is connected to my irrigation system, so is semi-critical).

I thought this might be a router issue. I've set my network mask to 255.255.254.0, and the WeatherBridge set the broadcast to 192.168.1.255, which wouldn't have worked. However, I changed it back and the WeatherBridge is still not working.

Cant you simply run it on DHCP? There are tons of things you can do wrong when specifying IP, MASK, GATEWAY, DNS yourself.

Sorry, I've been away for a week.

I've actually not touched the settings for the WeatherBridge. The network mask setting change was in the router. The WeatherBridge is using DHCP. It is picking up the IP just fine (static), but I get the black text screen and can't get beyond that point. (I set the router back, but that didn't change anything.) I fear the WeatherBridge itself might have died.

I plugged the device in wired, and that didn't help. Here is the text from the page I see:

Meteobridge Landing Page (FW 1.1)

You got here, because Meteobridge application stack you wanted to access could not be loaded from the Internet. Most common reason for that is a bad network configuration of the Meteobridge device, that keeps the unit in endless fast blinking LED mode. From here you can do one of the following:
Wait: May be Meteobridge is still in the process of loading application stack from the Internet and it just needs a bit more time. You can give it a second try by this link
Cloud Simulator: You can setup a new network configuration for your device via this configurator in the cloud. You find details how to use this servive in the Meteobridge wiki, here.
Back to Defaults: When you have your Meteobridge in a cabled LAN environent with a DHCP server (mostly the router) up and running, you might be able to solve your networking issue by bringing your device back to standard network setup, by pressing the button until LED lights up for the first time. Unit will reboot in standard LAN DHCP client mode.
OpenWrt: As OpenWrt is fully operational in your device's flash storage and does not need to load an application stack from the Internet, you can start OpenWrt operation by this link. As OpenWrt is a very complex router setup, this is only recommended for experts, who are familar with OpenWrt and might be able to solve networking issues on that level.
To give you insight what your current networking setup is, you'll find some more networking details below. If you are not that deep into networking, just ignore.

Just plugging in the LAN cable does not switch the Weatherbridge back to LAN operation.
Please do as explained at the end of the "Getting Started" section of the wiki:
http://meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started

It needs the "one blink" reset to restart as LAN DHCP client.

How long do I have to hold the button down, and what light is going to flash??? There are multiple lights, and some are already flashing. I've held the button down for 30+ seconds with no affect.

I finally got past that step. However, the wired connection is giving me 192.168.168.111, so it's obviously not using DHCP. And, I get the same page when I access that IP. I can't get past the page posted above. Why is it not connecting to the internet and getting the download it needs. This has been working perfectly for a couple of years, and now won't start up correctly.

After several tries I got the factory reset to get beyond the black screen. Now I just have to figure out all the parameter changes I'd made (yes, I'm looking for a backup config file, but my PC has also died - hardware failure - so might not be able to track one down).

So now, the question remains.....why did the Meteobridge get into this state. I have a suspicion that I had a system reboot due to power outage while the server was having issues, but would that have essentially bricked the device????

Something with die WLAN/LAN or your Router/Provider has changed. This causes the Meteobridge not being able to connect to the Internet.
Doing the different reset options of the Meteobridge is rather simple. The LED to be watched for number of blinks while keeping the reset button pressed is simply the large LED underneath the button itself. You should start doing so not during boot process, but when Meteobridge is stuck at fast blinking.

I have it working. Now I just have to figure out all the service and weather network settings that I had entered. The factory reset got it running, but now I'm back to square one.

Not solved....it's back. I had to reboot my router. Now the Meteobridge is back in the mode of being stuck at the message that it can't load the stack. I know I can factory reset again, but this is annoying......any ideas on what is going on?

I had the same problem after a power outage that was back to back. The only fix was to re-flash the 3020 and start from new. Works great now.

I didn't have to go to that extent. Something in the networking messes up if there is an outage, and as you say, it could be that there are multiple glitches in a row that cause the condition.

I have now saved my configuration, and I save it again if I change anything. The last time this happened, I got it back up and running, then restored the configuration, and it worked great.

This didn't use to happen, though. I've gone through multiple power outages before without a hitch. It's only been recently (firmware change?) that things don't quite come up right after an outage.

Oh, there was the one time where the Meteobridge came up before the router and several devices thought it was the gateway/DHCP for a brief instant. Hosed a few devices until I rebooted everything again (and I was on vacation when it happened).

I'm not sure if it already exists but maybe a 10-20 second boot delay from when first powered may fix some of these issues that occur during power outages and the MB beats all other network devices?
