Success/failure of Ambient Weather USB sticks, compared to o

Post by sevenless »

Having seen a few other posts on here grumbling about the tiny Ambient Weather-provided USB sticks failing I was a bit paranoid about my own stick, and sure enough mine started showing signs of imminent failure about 48 hours ago when the meteohub log started to be filled with "Illegal data record" warnings.

I'm curious to know how many people purchased the NSLU2/Meteohub rig from Ambient Weather, how long ago you purchased it, and if your USB stick has shown any sign of failure.

I purchased my system less than 3 months ago, and the USB drive they provided was a tiny "KINGMAX" brand 2GB stick.

I replaced it this morning with a 4GB PNY USB drive purchased from a local retailer. I've had good luck with PNY drives in my digital cameras, and those deal with a lot more write/delete/overwrite cycles than the Meteohub stick should be seeing, especially over such a short time period!

My hub has just started with the "illegal data" on the meteohub log. Does this mean the memory chip is getting ready to go out?

I got mine from Ambient too - but didn't even give it a chance to fail - it looked so cheap!!! I switched over to a 4gb Kingston Travelmate - no problems so far!!
