ALIX -> Alternative Hardware?

Post by Rabbit69 »

Hallo Admin

I would vote for this hardware version, price is pretty much close to NSLU and if Boris find some time to look at it, it might be the future winner as successor of NSLU.

But dont forget you also need an AC/DC adaptor and an enclosure.

Yes I know, but still it is 110 EUR with enclosure and AC/DC adapter for wholesale which is fine. May be Ebox 3300 which Boris mentioned (at a performance level of ebox 4300 at a price point of ebox 2300) should be also fine.

I will get a ALIX system and try it out. My guess is that it will work without major problems... stay tuned.

Good news...

I tested the ALIX.1D board during the weekend. I had a CF card installed and set BIOS to boot from removable media (USB stick) as first option, if not there from harddisk (CF card) as second option.
Booting the unit with plugged-in installation USB stick installs the Meteohub system exactly like on ebox or fit-PC Slim.

I got my pieces from NRG Systems (ww.nrg-systems.de) :
- ALIX.1D board (119 Euro)
- Housing for ALIX 1C/1D (20 Euro)
- Power-Supply (6 Euro)
That gives about 145 Euro including VAT without shipping.

Putting the pieces together took about 5 minutes and is very straight forward. Form factor is very flat (about the height of fit-PC Slim) but about 2-3 times the area of a fit-PC Slim). The case is pure metal and very sturdy. There are no power-on leds or switches. All connectors are on the back. Unit automatically boots when connected to power.

I also bought a WLAN mini-PCI card with RF cable and antenna. Unfortunately, the WLM54G WLAN card they sell doesn't do with Meteohub's pre-installed WLAN drivers and I did not get it working with ndiswrapper and available Windows drivers at all so far. So no success on WLAN option at the moment, but this is more a problem of the WLAN adapter, than related to ALIX.1D itself.

Measured power demand is a maximum of 6 Watts (without doing wifi, measured with my power meter +/- 1 watt).

Great news! Since I have some trubbles after updading my NSLU2 from 2.6 to 3.1, I'll keep this option in mind. It will take some weeks until I buy new eqiupment but I'll do it.
