NSLU2 Problem: No response from weather underground

Post by PasadenaDave »

Using a Linksys NSLU2 router feeding into a Westel 327W DSL Modem. I can ping the NSLU2 ok from the PC also attached to the Modem, but the NSLU2 cannot manage to get out to Weather Underground.
I've tried using both DHCP and Fixed IP address for the Linksys, and on fixed IP address, the software will not allow me to enter a Gateway address (presumably the DSL Modem address.)
This is version 2.6.21.7 of the linux kernel, Meteohub 3.1, and it's activated. Weather Underground isn't getting any updates from my station. HELP... Ideas? (Oh yes, the firewall is turned OFF on the DSL modem - cannot get the NSLU2 to communicate either way, firewall on or off. Ideas?) Thx!

If it does not have valid IPs for Gateway and DNS it won't be able to connect to the internet.

Could you please post your IP settings as is (IP, Gateway, DNS, WAN IP).

Thanks.. IP is 192.168.1.79 manually set.
Gateway - will not accept any gateway, automatically switches to same IP as above.
DNS: I've used several know good DNS addresses, including the IP of the DSL Modem, none work.
Wan IP: Comes up blank NO INTERNET ACCESS.
Have also tried DHCP, still comes up No Internet Access. Meteohub s/w version 3.1, activated, system id e83K. If I update the Meteohub to 3.3, does the activated license go away?
Thanks for thinking about this.

no gateway, no internet access.

please
1) unmark DHCP
2) type in the gateway and dns (often same IP as gateway)
3) press save, ignore what it returns
4) reboot ("maintenance" page)

after that, network settings should be as expected.

installing updates does not harm your activation code.

Thank you. Is the USB card still plugged into the hub at this time, or is it unplugged and saved? The "manual" isn't clear, kind of sounds like the USB code key stays in port Disk2 all the time.
I'll try the manual mode and reboot tonite. USB in or out?
Thx!

usb stick always has to be connected to meteohub!

Think of it like being drive "c:" of your windows pc. no drive c: no function at all. never pull off the usb stick during operation. That would be like disconnecting your pc's hard disk on the fly. anything might happen, but nothing good.

Thank you, will try these tonight. USB stick has always been inserted.
My recall is that the Gateway address always comes up the same address as the NSLU2 address, regardless what I set it for. Thanks!

Ignore what it does return and reboot, to make changes active.

OK, I'll try this.
BTW, a reboot takes several minutes, and during that time, there are many tones, some short beeps of maybe 8 beeps, other lower pitch beeps (one or two at a time), more several short beeps... Takes maybe a minute or two before the web interface can be brought up.
Thx!

The beeping is the NSLU2 telling you its IP address. Count the multiple short beeps as the digits, then the lower-pitched single beeps as the spacer (dot) between parts of the IP address. There are also a few low-pitched beeps at the very beginning and end of the process.

Thus if you have 'beep' (pause) 'beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep' (pause) 'beep beep' (lower boop) 'beep' (pause) 'beep beep beep beep beep beep' (pause) 'beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep' (lower boop) 'beep' (lower boop), that's the "192.168.1." portion of the address. Ten beeps in a row signifies a zero.

Boris added that as a back-up way to find the system on your local network in case something happens and it unexpectedly changes from the IP address you were expecting.

I'm happy to report that setting the gateway and DNS to the DSL Modem address and then rebooting fixed the problem, and the station is happily sending data to Weather Underground now.

Thank you!
