AC Power fail : NSLU2 does not restart itself

Post by lcoulon »

Hello,

Is there a way that in case of AC power cut, NSLU2 restarts itself when power is recovered ?

This will avoid to switch it back on when i'm out of home .

Many thanks for your help,

There is a how-to manual in the Downloads section that explains the modifications necessary to enable the NSLU2 to automatically power up.

An alternative approach is to power the slug trough the usb port. If you use a powered hub on your weatherstation port that can power the slug as well.

I've been running with that setup for a few years with a powered hd case when my slug was running as webserver.

It is not recommended to use a hub on the boot disk / usb stick

The slug does not run on ac but on a 5V DC.

From linksys it is delivered with a PSU that delivers the 5V DC.

What i did was to use a hd case with its own power supply and that powered the slug trough its usb port (I.e i did not connect the linksys psu at all)

You can do the same with a usb hub that has its own psu. The specification for powering trough the usb is only 500mA and the slug does draw more power so it is running out of specs. But many usb hubs allow more than the 500mA anyway.

At the moment i'm still powerering my weather meteohub slug with its own power supply diretly, but i plan to power both it and the weather station directly enstead as i did for the slug that i had running as nas and webserver

This is an interesting modification, but how does it address the original concern about enabling the NSLU2 to automatically turn back on after a power failure?

Does powering it via the USB port cause this to happen as a side effect?

Yes - when applying power to the slug trough one of its USB ports it boots imideately - and hence also after an power failure.

That why i posted it here :-)

I actually used the slugs psu to power the 2.5" external hd and the slug that way round

Discalimer - this was tested with a slug several years ago. Maybe the hardware has changed since.

I have put a auto power mod on my weather station site here http://home2.btconnect.com/brettoliver/nslu2.htm

You can add the switch or just leave it out so you only need to connect 1 wire to your NSLU2.

I have used this mod for some time now with no problems.
