Remote SMB access

Post by Mattk »

Without using Public IP/Port forwarding/DDNS etc is there any way to remotely access the MB SMB share?

Basically you are asking the question if you can access a share exported by a server in a LAN from outside the LAN without using routing services like port forwarding (combined with DDNS) or VPN ...
If you also exclude VPN, the air will get rather thin ....

what's your scenario ?

you can connect two or more different LAN segments, even separated by the internet, building an intranet by connecting the segments via their routers and using VPN technology (protocol is your choice or what the routers provide).
When you can connect the segments, you can also export e.g. NFS shares across segments or use SMB shares across segments.
If you connect to MB locally or from a different network segment doesn't make a difference as long as the subnets used are known in each of the subnets.
You need the proper router hardware (and software) and need to be sufficiently knowledgeable in networking.

I had done that before using two LAN segments 2,000 km apart across the internet as "my" intranet and could just mount everything that was exported in segment A also in segment B. Including my Meteobridge server and its exported SMB share.

And you can also connect (with the proper client software) from any device in the internet via a VPN channel to that intranet - or just to a single LAN segment.

Scenario is looking at trying to eliminate the need for public IP's which for quite a few reasons are becoming harder to deal with. Looking at ways around the public IP thing using standard internet SIMs

Remote MB access is fine via the built-in Internet Remote Login option via HTTPS. Accessing the SMB data share is now solved using the Remote login link in conjunction with the Upload.html & Download.cgi routines. What was bugging things was different WinOS not/working with different implementations of SMB between MBPro & PRo2 in combination with requiring the actual MB login ID/Password and not the SMB password regardless of SMB password settings. Remote control of the SMB data shares is probably 99% workable with an additional Delete option to supplement the Upload/Download? @Boris?

Also been playing with Teltonika routers and their Remote Monitoring System (RMS), no problem with logging direct into the MB web Gui from a standard internet connection. Have not yet able to reach the data shares thou?

The other side of this and really unrelated to the MB access is management control of a Davis setup. Envoy, WLIP etc WLIP web page is accessible standard HTTP stuff, although handy doesn't really do much. Still work in progress if it is possible to have the Teltonika get to the Envoy proper via WeatherLinkPC on port 22222?

I added a feature to the download.cgi script to allow deletion of files via remote HTTPS access. Please read here: https://meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/ ... ersion_5.7

Running these scripts from inside MB interface (behind the MB login) also allows Win7 access to Pro2 SMB, Win10 access to Pro SMB with SMB User only setting, which is a bonus.
