OS THC238 sensor works...

Post by skyewright »

Just to mention that I have just added an extra Oregon Scientific sensor that isn't included in the list of compatible sensors in the manual.

It is an OS THC238 (a 3 channel 'temp only' extra sensor with temp probe on a 3m lead) and it is being picked up by RFXCOM and recorded by Meteohub just fine.

The sensor appears in Meteohub as a THWR288. :)

Don't want to ask the same question all the time, but I want this one for a sensor in jar (solar radiation) meter. So how well is it picked up by the RFXCOM in a line of sight? Any clues. I think it is made for 30 metres?

That's how I use it - well, actually, one for that, and another as a soil temp (100mm depth).

Mine are both within 30m. I've had no reason to try them any further away.
Given that they are picked up just fine, and every bit as well as the other "extra sensors".

N.B. Probably obvious, but unlike the standard WMR928 "outdoor" sensors, the THC238 (and the other "extra" sensors, is completely housed[1] in a single unit (about the size of a tape cassette case), i.e. no external transmitter unit or solar panel.

I could perhaps try taking one of my extra sensors "for a walk" sometime, but if I did it would not be either of the THC238 units (since being "In a Jar" and "Soil" they are somewhat "plumbed in"!).

PS. Something of an aside, but I take advantage of the RFXCOM to have a total 5 of these "3 channel" extra sensors. That works fine for ~99.3%(!) of the time - i.e. most of the time having 2 sensors on a given channel is not problem at all, but (presumably) due to tiny differences in internal timing, the moment of transmission gradually drifts through the minute and as a result the signals from a pair of sensors operating on the same channel occasionally clash. My experience is that with both pairs of sensors that I have sharing channels this clash results in a loss of signal for approx. 3 hours at around 18 day intervals. I am happy to accept that compromise.
I suspect that if one of the pair of sensors were substantially closer than the other then during the clash the closer one might still register (i.e. obscure the other signal rather than get mixed up with it) - but that is just a guess.
N.B. This is not in anyway a failing of RFXCOM - it is a result of me trying to "squeeze a quart into a pint pot" and meeting the laws of Physics.

[1] The THC238 temp probe itself is of course on a 3m lead...

I ordered one with "The UK Weather Store".
Delivery was quick (two days from Britain to Bavaria) and postal charge was just 7€.
Very impressive!

Here´s the link to the Oregon Sensors with the UK Weather Store:

Bavaria ... 12 points :-)

Hallo Wolfgang,

Danke
Andreas

Me too.
I have been very happy with their service.
On occasions I have spoken to them by phone. They really know about the things they sell.
