USB Meteobridge VM & Synology

Post by jailbreaker07 »

I got Meteobridge running on my Synology via VM. Is it possible to install the update via USB? I also wanted to test whether the USB connection is also forwarded. I would like to try this out in the 14-day test phase in case I want to connect a weather station via USB at a later date. Many thanks, regards, Thorsten

Thorsten:

I have Meteobridge VM running on Synology VMM for over a week now with no errors. I am uploading to 10 different portals to provide a good stress load, so far no problems, the VM autostarts as programmed, and the VM is much more stable than my previous version on PROXMOX. Ensure that the VM has rights to the admin user and service account if applicable, also make sure that the virtual vmSwitch and vm can access your dhcp scope or the install script will hang up at the end.

Mine is running on a 2 Bay DS224+, that’s an entry level NAS so you should be fine as well. You do have to upgrade the RAM from the stock 2gb, Synology only recommends installing an additional 4gb, but myself and many others have installed a 16gb for a total of 18gb, the cost between the 4gb and 16gb is minimal. You can find both the 4gb and 16gb part numbers in the Synology forum, I also upgraded my DS200 to 6gb as well with no problems. If you can’t find the part number please respond and I will post it here.

As for using the USB, you would need to modify the installation instructions slightly. Mount your host USB port as pass though in the VM provisioning, then burn the image as bootable to the USB stick, I use RUFUS which is quick and free, but use your own program of choice. When you boot you will need to also modify the procedures, you will need to load it as a bootable disk instead of booting an image. It’s much easier to simply boot using an image as described, I download the X86 ISO/TZ from the Meteobridge website to my PC, untar the file to an ISO, then use the Synology File Manager App to upload the ISO to an empty folder on the Synology NAS. My NAS units are located headless in a network rack, so it’s easier for me to push the files from my office; however, I respect that you may need to use USB for security reasons or when located across a WAN.

Thank you for considering testing on Synology, so far my DS224+ unit has been the only test bed, so it would be good to have another tester to help identify any problems and on other models.

I was also concerned, as you, about wanting to use the usb port for other weather stations. I have two other USB Ecowitt hubs with unique sensors, I considered using a USB hub, but I’m not sure that CMM has the complexity to pass through multiple devices to the VM on a virtual USB port. I got rid of the Ecowitt USB hubs and purchased a Ecowitt GW2000 with an IP connection, problem solved for a small additional cost.

My apologies if I misunderstood your question. I tried to include more info than you probably needed just in case.
