6510 or 6520 DataLogger

Like a previous poster, I am interested in replacing my Oregon Scientific WMR 968 with the Davis Wireless VantagePro 2 (6152) and would like to connect it to my NSLU2. I have a new iMac running Snow Leopard. Does it make a difference whether I get the DataLogger 6510 (for Windows) or the 6520 (for Mac) given that the console will be connected to the NSLU2? many thanks in advance!

As Meteohub does not use the Davis software it does not make a difference.

I upgraded from a WMR100 to a VP2+ (6162UK) with a 6510USB connected to NSLU2 and it runs perfectly.

The only thing I would recommend is buying a good quality shielded USB cable to knock out any connection issues which have been reported. These manly happen when connected to a PC but I did not take any chances and purchased one of these Premium Gold USB Cables ( Type A to Mini-B ) and it has been running for last 5 months and never missed a beat.

Fantastic bit of kit, hope you enjoy your upgrade.

Thanks so much for the information! I was about to go for the Vantage Pro 2, but then I saw the Vantage Vue, which looked equally tempting and a bit less money. From what I gathet, the VP2 and Vue use the same data logger and it sounds like the Vue is compatible with the NSLU2.

Too bad about my Oregon Scientific WMR-968. The console started losing connections with each sensor and now can't keep a connection with any sensor.:(

Hopefully I'll be happier with a Davis Vantage station. Many thanks again for your help!

For my set-up the VP2 works best as the wind vain is 7 meters higher up a pole, then the IIS. It is also connected to the ISS via cable, so no more getting it down to change batteries.

Personally I prefer the VP2's expandability, I know Davis extra sensors are expensive, but I would rather have the option than not, which is the only disadvantage of the Vantage Vue.

As for workings, they both do things the same way, so no problems there and the 'Frequency-hopping spread spectrum radio' is the same which gives fantastic range. I can put my console anywhere in the house and it has never lost a packet yet.

Whichever you get you should not be disappointed.

And with the VP2 if you don't like the idea of your rain bucket being up on a pole aronnd 1.5m above the ground (something that put me off the VP2 for a long time) it's possible to buy a spare "rain gauge base" quite cheaply, then you can take the SIM box and the temp/hum 'pagoda' off the rain gauge, re-attach them to the spare rain base, mount the SIM/pagoda/spare base on a pole and place the rain gauge in a better location connected back to the SIM via an RJ11 extension. With that arrangement my rain bucket is almost sat on the ground, with the rim at around 12"/30cm above ground level. :)
