Alix 3D3 hang up, after lots of "meteohub kernel: usb 2-1: u

Post by johannes770 »

Hello,

My Alix3D3 in combination with WMR-200A works really well with meteohub!

The only messages and final "stopping" of the Alix was the fact, that there were hundreds of system messages telling that
"Nov 2 00:05:13 meteohub kernel: usb 2-1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd hidlog3 rqt 33 rq 9 len 8 ret -110"

currently and unfortunately beeing not that expert to find and correct the causes fot this, I would like to ask for a proposal what to change etc. in this case.

thank you in advance for some proper possibilities!

Hi johannes770,

I am also using an ALIX 3d3, with a WMR-200.

I am also seeing the same message in my logs:

Nov 2 01:14:07 meteohub kernel: usb 2-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd hidlog3 rqt 33 rq 9 len 8 ret -110

with the very occasional variant:

Nov 2 01:16:50 meteohub kernel: usb 2-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd hidlog3 rqt 129 rq 6 len 9 ret -110.

I am NOT however, seeing the ALIX stop functioning, and suspect that these messages are a distraction.

Can you tell us a few other details about your system?

- How often are you seeing this occur?
- What voltage & current rating is your ALIX power supply?
- What type of USB cable are you using? Is this a cheap cable or more quality, shielded piece?
- What type of compact flash do you have in the ALIX box?
- Do you have any additional WLAN cards or other hardware on the board?
- If you plug a monitor & keyboard into the 3D3 when it is in the stopped state, are there any additional messages on the console screen?
- Do you have this attached to a UPS or power conditioner?

I would be most suspicious of either the Power supply or the Flash card.

Hello Hugo,

Thank you for your reply und questions herefore.
Please find my current answers here beneeth your questions:

- How often are you seeing this occur?
This happens e.g. after about 3 hours, sometimes more or less.

- What voltage & current rating is your ALIX power supply?
Well, I use the "original" 18V-power supply of varia-store.com

- What type of USB cable are you using? Is this a cheap cable or more quality, shielded piece?
It is a shielded one. once I have alos separately put the "common shielding" of the cable and the Alix-case on "ground" (without measured better results).

- What type of compact flash do you have in the ALIX box?

I have inside a Transcend, cfm udma 300x, 4gb, ts4gcf300

- Do you have any additional WLAN cards or other hardware on the board?

Just the one of the basic alix WLAN-equiment.

- If you plug a monitor & keyboard into the 3D3 when it is in the stopped state, are there any additional messages on the console screen?

On the monitor there does't occure any message to be seen.

After e.g. rebooting I can watch the starting processes, the booting ends up at the "login"-prompt. this is so far ok. Then after a while the Montor switches to "black screen", also no problem at this moment.
Then, some three or four hours, the system stops wihtout notification.
I have to say, that currently I do not have connected an USB-keyboard. This will follow this week to be tested.

- Do you have this attached to a UPS or power conditioner?
The Alix3D3 and other components are not connected to any UPS, just directly via power supply "from the socket".

Hope I could give you a proper overview.

The next days I will test the ALIX with a keyboard attached.

best regards,
Johannes

Hey johannes770,

Start by getting the keyboard on it. The screen is automatically blanked by the kernel and you will need to disable that to see if it is telling you anything.

When you restart with a keyboard, log onto the console and type "setterm -blank 0" . You may also need to do a "setterm -powersave off". This should stop the screen blanking.

It probably isn't going to tell you anything, but it may.

I suspect that you are looking at one of the following, so try changing things in this order:
  • The Weather station - Try running the box with the weather station unplugged, does it still crash? If it doesn't, but the weather station works ok on another computer, see the last point (ALIX Board) or replace the USB cable.
  • Power Supply. This could be one of 2 forms.
    1. Dirty power supply, or unstable power supply resulting in crashing the hardware. If you can plug it into a UPS, or at least try it plugged in in a different part of the house.
    2. While the 18volt power supply is the recommended supply, it will generate more heat on the board than a lower voltage supply such as 12volt (My system is running on a 12 volt supply). This may be contributing to heat related crashes.
  • Heat Related - Is the box sitting in a stack of things or out on its own, is there good air flow around it, or is it closed in. It may be worth trying taking the aluminum ends off to see if it works better when air can flow through it.
  • Bad connections on the flash or the WLAN card - Try removing and re-inserting the flash and the WLAN cards, this will reseat the connections and generally will remove any scale or tarnish that is inhibiting the connections.
  • Bad WLAN card - Try running Meteohub with the WLAN card removed, see if the problem still occours. This could be hardware related, or linux driver related, one thing at a time though, work out if it is the WLAN card.
  • Bad Flash - you could have bad flash, try changing the flash
  • Bad ALIX 3d3 board - The software appears to be stable and work on other 3D3 boards, so if all other things have failed, you may have a problem with the ALIX board itself. You could try running up a current version of something like iMedia Linux and seeing if it crashes also, this will help identify if it is possibly related to the version of linux, but this seems unlikely. Once you have taken all the other steps, and documented them to the vendor, they should have no issue replacing the unit for you.

Hope this helps.

Dou you have a usb hub in between? Not all usb hubs do work well in my experience.

Hang can be because of a memory leak in usb driver. I did a patch to that I will apply with next update. But this will only fix the memory leak, not the appearance of the error in general.

Hi,

thank you for request!
no, there is no hub in between.

ok, thank you, maybe it is your mentioned memory leak.

I have still to plug in the keyboard, I do not have one yet to test it, but I like to see maybe possible differences then.

Hello,

I've also an Alix-System, an i'll the "same" error-Message.
Without ma WMR200, I'll get non of the Messages, with the Station, I'll get several Messages during an hour.

I get the computer mid october. The first Message is from October 16.
All in all, i'll have nearly 2000 Messages with the search-character USB in.

Hi,
i've checd the "Big G" and found an explanation that will comply that only Alix Systems have this problem.
http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/l ... 11511.html
They said there, that an ripple on the USB-Lines interfere with the USB-drivers.

Hello,

So the current status is , that the ALIX is equipped with an (USB-)keyboard and I let the system run for a few days.

the result is now that, system it self (the ALIX and its special linux-System) is still working at least a couple of days (and I think will continue to do so).

> The meteohub-admin-interface and the meteohub-calculation processes (ftp of png files etc.) stops some times after 3h(ours) or 10h or 2 h, a.s.o. very unpredictable.

I think I have to get more in depth of the linux-system to understand internal processes to get a bit forward.hm?

> well, I will still observe the behaviour of the meteohub logs, maybe I can find some more specific information for an interpretation.

thank you for your previous proposals so far,
regards,
johannes

.. additional info-update:

during the "abscence" of the meteohub-"admin-interface", meteohub seems still logging WMR200A-weather-data for some hours.

I will try find out for how long the logging countinues be active.

The status is now, that the meteohub-sw stops sometimes unpredictable (e.g. after two days) while linux processes are still in service.

The timer for an automatic reboot, set up via the meteohub-gui, e.g. at 0:00 is working.

So this is currently the solution for the "meteohub-stopping issue".

johannes
