WU station Name vs. ID?

Post by ETRancher »

When I registered my station with WxUnderground, I was assigned a station ID (KCOSALID2) and a station name (Salida). I understand that the ID is fixed but I want to change the station name to one of my choosing. Making the edit through the WU website doesn't do it. Can this change be made through the Meteohub admin pages or is this still a WU isuue?

As far as I can determine this is a Wunderground thingy.

It looks like the stationname is derived from the city name. Might be an idea to ask the question on the wunderground helpdesk. Based on experience they will get back to you but it might take some time.

Thanks but the WU support system has been less than helpful. It took three times submitting a Help Ticket before I finally got a reply six days later. They told me the Station ID could not be changed but made no reference to the station Name. They completely missed my question. I've asked again but I'm not optimistic about an answer.

I'm confused.
I see your station name and your location, Elk Trail, Salida CO, but no reference to a station name "Salida." I see just the WU naming protocol, KCOSALID2.
I'm KMIREADI2 (no idea where KMIREADI1 might be), and as far as I can tell, the only thing I can change is the description of my location, West Side Reading Township, which identifies my location to people in this part of Michigan.
It appears you're aware of something about your presence on WU that I'm not aware of about my own. Can you point me to that part of the WU site that identifies you as simply Salida? I might find something I wish I could change. :)

When I first registered my station with WU, they assigned the Place name "Salida" and the Station ID "KCOSALID2". These appear in the list of stations on the WunderMap and other places on their website. More than likely this was because when I filled in the information on the "Add a Station" page, I only entered the "required" fields and not the "optional" ones. They picked a town that was close, made sense to them, but it wasn't really representative of my location. After contacting WU Support, they explained that the "Neighborhood" field is where you can set your own "Place" name.

Once you make your edits in the Neighborhood field, give it a day or so - they don't update this information immediately.

WUnderground has no idea either. Station specs locate it at N 0.0.0, E 0.0.0, with no data, and apparently no archived data. Trying to send a message to station owner, it will go to username ladyvic, but that is all available information.

It appears WUnderground assigns unique station IDs which are not recycled.
