SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
I'm getting the following error on test of my email setup. This only occurs when I use the four-digit port (2525); when I use the three-digit port provided by my ISP (587) it works just fine. I routinely use the four-digit port number with other email clients, so I know this works. I'm wondering if I've discovered a bug, perhaps in how the SMTP Host field is parsed.
Details below. Thanks,
Ed
Mail send failed: 0 (null)#blah@mydomain.com: 0 (null)

Note - Substitute your actual domain name for "yourdomain.com" and substitute the first part of your email address for "user."
* Username = user@yourdomain.com
* Password = the password you set up when you configured your mail box
* Incoming Mail Server = mail.yourdomain.com
* Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.yourdomain.com
o Outgoing Server Requires Authentication (typically found in advanced options or settings)
o Do NOT check "Log on Using Secure Password Authentication"
o Use the same Username and Password as Incoming or select "Use Same Settings as Incoming"
* Outgoing Server Port = 2525 or 587
o This is subject to change based on the individual preferences of your ISP

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
I get the same error on my Meteoub running on my NSLU2. No matter what smtp server I try nor what security setting I use I get the same failure. The only related entries in any logs are in the system log and they only say the same as the error message. I have Windows machines that can send smtp mail just fine. It seems to me this used to work; I recently set Meteohub back up as I had not been using it for 6-8 months after my USB stick died. Did some update in the mean time break or change something? Am I missing something simple?Mail send failed: 0 (null)#blah@mydomain.com: 0 (null)
Thanks,
Steve

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
Is the source address really the same as the destination address? I think they have to be different addresses to work.
Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
I've tried it with both being the same and both being different - no change. I've tried all of my different e-mail addresses also to no avail.

It has been a long time, but I think I recall not being able to make it work with the same source and destination address. This was using a port number that was only two digit though.
Do you have to use a four digit port number? I guess port 587 requires SMTPS which the Meteohub can't handle.

No, it is using the default of port 25.

Which version of Meteohub are you using? It works fine on 4.6t on both an NSLU2 and Sheevaplug.
Perhaps you could post an image of your email setting with appropriate redaction just in case there is something obvious that you are overlooking.

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
I have the latest 4.7d loaded and running. Attached is a snippet screen capture of the smtp section.
Thanks,
Steve and it doesn't matter whether all the domains are the same or they are all different...

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
Steve, just to be clear, the save and test button also fails or is that null error from a save and test? I don't see any obvious problems with your configuration.
Port 25 email traffic is allowed by Windstream and it works for other email clients?
Smtp.windstream.net is the correct email server address? Some ISPs have changed to something like smtpauth.windstream.net when they added user name and password authentication.

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
Yeah, I snipped the screen after I had tried a "Save and Test" to show what the message is that I'm seeing. I use those same settings (albeit without the ':25') in all my Windows PCs (XP, Win7, WHS, HomeSeer) and they all send fine. I've tried all the smtp servers I have access to (smtp.windstream.net, smtp.iowatelecom.net, smtp.sprintpcs.com, smtp.gmail.com) and it errors out the same with any of them...

Re: SMTP "Mail Send failed: 0 (null)" with 4-digit port
Is there any chance the browser you are using isn't filling in the entry slots correctly even though it appears that they are correct? I'm really straining possibilities here, but a few years back I was using Netscape 7.2 with Meteohub and it had trouble displaying changed entries. Some entries would even blank out after saving.
Other than that I'm currently out of ideas. Sorry.

I don't think so, I don't have trouble with anything else. Thanks, d_l, for taking the time to verify I haven't missed something simple.
