Minimizing bandwidth/data volume

Post by johnn »

I have an MB installed at a remote site, using a mobile broadband USB device. The plan I am on gives me 100MB for a very low cost, but then I must pay for another 1GB if I go over the 100MB!

As I end up most months using about 120MB, I was wondering if there is a way to minimise the data volume. I only have the basic sensors, Wind, Rain, Temp/Hum and Air Pressure.

Thanks.

This can depend a little on the service provider and/or mobile broadband device which you may not have a lot of control over.

Without knowing the extent of your upload format and/or interval, can you cut the upload interval down at all or trim/re-organize the format in any way?

I'm just using the WMR200 upload to Weather Underground (sorry, should have said).
I'm astonished at the verbosity of the WU message format, and would hate to be sending data that I am not actually collecting.

Is there some form of more API-like interface to WU?

I did try changing the update interval from 10min to 15, but the data volume seemed to get even worse! (I blamed connection maintenance...?)

Worse scenario I might have to drop WU, I guess.

Thanks for any input.
