Note on Ambient Weather Network

Post by colmeteo »

Boris should include a note when setting up Ambient Weather Network or remove it from the options. Had to come here and look to see why my station wasn't updating. AW could at least offer a subscription plan to Meteobridge owners.

With Meteobridge we try to feed all networks of relevance, but we don't interfere with their conditions of use. So when Meteobridge offers a technical layer to connect to a certain network, that says nothing about that you will be accepted as a data source there. As this is valid in general, I don't see demand for any notes on this obvious fact. Furthermore, I don't want to be in the "firing line" between the network interests and the users. There are plenty of networks to choose from, I am sure anyone will find one that really fits them.

Granted, but today it's not technically possible to send to AW unless it is their branded WeatherBridge, so in the generic firmware I don't see the point of including it.

It's the MAC address that the vendor is controlling which allows your data being received by their server or not, it really has nothing to do if it is a branded WeatherBridge or not.

I would tend to agree that the AW network link in Weather Networks is worthless at this point. Ed (AW) has made it clear that their site is ONLY interested in data from equipment bought from AW. That it is a business decision he had made. It seems very shortsighted. I had (VERY past tense)been using AW equipment for the past couple of years as well as my DIY Meteobridge and I was NOT amused when he cut off the feed from my meteobridge unless I paid $150 for the privilege (not going to happen!). As we all know, the effort to flash these small routers over to meteobridge is just about foolproof, so the price that AW wants for their branded Weatherbridge is highly questionable.

So now I am running a Davis VP2 Plus station with a belfryboy USB data logger to my meteobridge and it works perfectly.
