Question about MAC address

Post by staze »

Hi All,

Have a relatively random question. The wifi MAC address for my Meteobridge Nano SD shows as ba:d8:12:00:42:35. Problem is, that MAC address seems to have an unregistered "owner" (check something like: https://macvendors.com/)

Is the Nano just generating a random MAC when it's first booted, or...?

Thanks!

Interesting. My MB Pro MAC returns "8Devices" which I guess is better than my webcam MAC which returns "Not Found"

A MAC adress is never random but hardcoded I think.
Would be interesting to see same MAC adresses on my network....

But I'm no MAC expert (maybe MCdonald's :D )

You can assign a MAC in software (assuming the driver supports it) that is "random".

That is odd... there are other Mac address registries, maybe that one is just off. Either way, I can't find any record of the one used by the Nano. =/

I would guess that "8Devices" could be a name from somewhere in the manufacture chain of my MB Pro. Knowing nothing about the NANO could it be reflecting a MAC from somewhere else in your network? I seem to remember that some routers/modems could mirror to the outside world the MAC from a game controller or a PC so things would work with software license.

Login to your modem or router you should be able to see a list of the IP addresses and MACs for everything connected.

MB PROs are based on the Carambola2 module from 8devices. Looks like 8devices is big enough to be listed as separate company in your MAC lookup lists.

MB MANOs are based on Vocore2 made by a small manufacturer in China. I think they have not made it into the global MAC listings.

However, MACs are unique, so there is no problem apart that your network scanner does not show a network vendor name for the NANOs.

Thanks Admin. Not too worried about overlap, but rather unregistered OUI’s (which could lead to overlap at some future date).

The plot thickens though.

http://vonger.cn/?p=896

That would seem to be their registration for an OUI from IEEE. However, even that registration doesn’t show up. Also, they’re outside that block by using ba:d8:12:0 (which almost looks like a typo (ba vs b8).

Anyway, super odd. Glad to have confirmation it’s expected behavior.

Thanks!

Can anyone else confirm their MAC (for NANO) starts with same prefix as I have listed? Vonger is claiming a one-off mistake for mine (which seems unlikely).

So here's instructions they gave for updating MAC...

Seems... complex, and maybe not something I want to do (I worry about bricking the unit). Any thoughts @admin?

Interesting... wonder if it was a specific run.

Okay, definitely want to hear info from Boris before I try to dive into fixing the MAC.

Don't do that! When you do it the license of your NANO will be gone and it will stop logging data. You also have a severe chance to brick the NANO. I will not replace NANOs destroyed by reflashing things.

Totally makes sense (I figured that's what flashing would do). And totally makes sense you wouldn't replace if I bricked it. =)

Any suggestions for fixing the MAC, or am I stuck with "bad" one?

Thanks!

It seems like a glitch in the initial setup done in the factory, but you don't have any negative impact by this.
It is just a number. I don't understand why you are so focused to have this number in the expected range.
For me personally I couldn't care less, but may be I overlook something. Does it have a practical negative impact on you?
