WL Cloud Rainfall Conversions

Post by Mattk »

The following is based on a metric configuration, Vantage Vue, a NanoSD previously installed 2018 which was recently updated to latest firmware with the ability now to upload to WL Cloud.

Current yearly rainfall total is 800 mm which is noted in the nano Min/Max Data values. Rainfall (800mm) is also confirmed from a second Envoy/WLIP as 800mm for both Envoy and WLIP Upload, both units reading the same ISS so all is good so far.

- With NanoSD uploading WL Cloud rainfall total shows 1032mm which is rather a strange value compared to 800mm actual?
- Using [add sensor] (Station Settings) added rain0total to the Calibration list, no values changed, simply added with the default Offset/Factor/Unit. WL Cloud rainfall Total dropped back to 812.8mm but still not really correct relative to 800mm actual?

The only comparison I can see that would do that is WL Cloud upload by default requires rainfall in Tips or similar related to Imperial units then converted back on WL Cloud? The above values can be duplicated by the following

800mm / 0.25 => 3200 * 0.254 => 812.8mm / 0.2 => 4064 * 0.254 => 1032mm so one can see basically the 812.8mm is probably a factor rounding issue 0.25 v 0.254?

Or am I missing something all together with this?

There is another similar query to this one on WXForum but that one is going from an imperial gauge to WL Cloud but there appears to be a similar connection?

Unfortunately, the reply form Boris is not encouraging. It appears the folks at Davis are not sharing their API info.

"sorry, I currently don't have a solution for this, as there is no API definition for weatherlink available."

I remain in the same boat that you are in.

Wondering if this is the issue I’m seeing…

I’ve noticed everything from my NanoSD currently shows 2.16” of rain total for today, except WeatherLink which shows 1.7”. Even my second Davis Console talking direct to station shows 2.16”…

Where’s the discussion on wxforum?

okay, mine isn't a rounding error. 1.7"->mm is 43.18mm. 43.18/.2mm is 215.9. 215.9 tips * 0.01" is what my rain total should be of 2.16 (with some rounding errors).

So for whatever reason, either WL Cloud thinks my station has a metric spoon, or my NanoSD is sending data to WL Cloud in Metric... but from what I gather, WL Cloud/WLL/whatever just counts tips, not actual rain amounts. So changing the spoon size should resolve the issue. I just need to figure out where that is... I can't find it via website so it must be in their (terrible) software.

In WeatherLink.com [Account Information] you could check the [Unit Measurements] for Rain & ET

Could also check [Device Info] Station Model which provides a whole heap of different metric options but nothing specifically imperial (as such)

So, emailed Davis, still waiting back. From what I can tell, my spoon should be set to 0.01" since my station is set to "Vantage Vue, Wireless" (and not Vantage Vue, Metric).

So I'm a bit confused why the hell it's thinking it is Metric. =/

Davis just told me how to set on console, which isn't what NanoSD is attached to.

My NanoSD is in an Envoy... could the Envoy be set to Metric somehow? Would the NanoSD not be setting that on there? How would I change that? Hook up a Weatherlink USB adapter and change it then put the NanoSD back in? Or should the NanoSD be able to write that to the Envoy?

NANO can change the rain bucket size in the Vantage. This is controlled on "Station" tab, where you can select "rain collector size" options.

After having pressed "save" please check in "system - log files" tab the settings have been applied. There will be an error message, if it failed.

fwiw, box is unchecked again... so must just be a one-time setting, or should the box remain checked after hitting save?

Yup, something is not right here.

Just had a several message long email thread with WLL support, and they're saying everything is in inches. They only log tips, and if you change the unit in WLL, it will just convert.

I continue to see data from my NanoSD behaving like it's in inches but being interpreted like it's in mm, or something.

For example, all other weather systems I output to say "0.08 inches" of rain today, but WLL says 0.06 inches.

Doing the conversion, that's 8 tips of a 0.01" spoon. If you do 8 tips of a .2mm spoon, you get 1.6mm, converted to inches, that's 0.06 inches.

So something isn't right here, but if the NanoSD is just passing loop packets to WLL, then I'm at a loss, unless Meteobridge is altering the packets in some way.

Just another thought, noting I don't have imperial hardware but have seen some anomalies which might be parallel with metric?

Check the Weather Station>Settings tab and check if rainototal is listed in the installed Sensor list? If not then add sensor from the drop down list and also check Unit settings (mm or in).

it was indeed missing until I really started trying to figure this out a couple weeks ago, when I added it. Info is still wrong in WeatherLink.

But I just noticed something... see screenshot. The heck? I've changed them to be imperial units... guess we'll see.
