Meteobridge PRO2 can sniff WU uploads from your WiFi weather station!

Post by admin »

There is a trend that consumer weather station manufacturer intend to lock-in your weather data in their exclusive cloud and not to provide direct local data access from within your network. New Davis console 6313 is an example for this.

Many of these WiFi connected weather stations offer to directly upload data to Weather Underground. This upload is done by the weather station console through your WLAN via an unencrypted HTTP upload request to the Weather Underground network. Just released software version for Meteobridge PRO2 has a WLAN-LAN bridge operating mode that works as follows.
  • Meteobridge PRO2 needs to be connected to your LAN via Ethernet and WLAN bridge needs to be enabled on "Network" tab.
  • Your WiFi weather station now needs to connect to the Meteobridge WLAN bridge instead of directly connecting your WiFi. Meteobridge bridges any connection made to its WLAN bridge to your LAN.
  • Enable Weather Underground upload on your WiFi weather station. Now WU upload data is passing the WLAN-LAN bridge of Meteobridge which allows Meteobridge to evaluate the passing data.
  • Setup a "WU Upload Data Sniff" station as new Meteobridge weather station.
This might be an easy work-around to unlock data from otherwise rather closed weather station environments. Please find more information in the 6.2 Release Notes from May 21, 2025: https://www.meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php?title=Forum
