X-Axis and Major Tics

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to adjust the x-axis major tics? It appears that you can adjust the mxtics (minor xtics) with no problem but using "set xtics" doesn't seem to work. I have tried numerous variations of the set xtics command with no luck. I have a series of MH graphs using the time frame of Actual Day/Today and the default output generates a very crowded x-axis (see below). I would also like to create some other smaller graphs that would need some better spacing between x-axis tics. Thanks for any advice or solutions.
