FIXED THANKS *** Meteo bridge stops updating data on WS23xx

Post by xtommo »

Hi
I have TP-Link TL-MR2030 which i have installed the Meteobridge software on but i find that the unit continually stops updating after a few minutes of uptime. Also it stop sending data to WU after a few minutes also.

The setup is fairly simple so not sure why this is no unreliable.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Weather Station Hardware is LaCrosse WS-2355

i have noticed the the USB LED on the tp link flashes constantly when the device is running ok but after anything between 5 minutes to 30 minutes the LED goes solid and the unit stop updating data.
at the same time the USB LED stops flashing a weather underground appear pops up. hopefully that helps

I had a similar situation with a Nat Geo 265C (clone of WS1080) weather station. The latest firmware has been tweaked for USB issues that seem to plague these low end, low cost weather stations. Have you done a reboot to load the latest firmware?

Yeah I have rebooted multiple times as that's the only way to get new data. I actually found it stop responding a lot quicker since the firmware update. It's a shame I was hoping this would be a good alternative to having my computer on all the time.

Could you please email mac of your meteobridge (displayed on system tab) to "info(at)meteobridge.com"?
Let's try to solve the issue. WS23xx ist not widely used with Meteobridge so far and I don't have one
right now to test with. But having the MAC I might be able to login to your Meteobridge and check what is going on.

Your station (like my cheapie) is notorious for poor communications. One thing to try is changing the USB hub to a higher quality one. I tried FOUR Chinese hubs before I had to go out and pay $15 bucks for a Startech hub. Between that and the FW performance seems MUCH better and zero drop outs. Like you, I am looking to replace a PC and have an IP-only weather/webcam solution. This seems to fit the bill.

one thing I would like to clarify, do i need a usb 1.1 hub?
my USB dongle is USB 2.0 and i am plugging in directly into the MR3020.

i assume the hub is not required as comms does work for a little while and then stops.

i will email you my mac address. thanks for the assistance.

FYI. after my last reboot it lasted 9 minutes before comms to the station failed.

According to the Wiki, that station is not supported. http://www.meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/Stations No idea if it is close enough to one of the accepted ones. Some Lacrosse units do need a USB hob or serial interface. Hopefully Boris will see this thread before he goes on vacation...

it needs a USB 2.0 hub which does tranlate station's 1.x protocol to 2.0 (which the MR3020 needs) only, if it a USB 1.x station.
When your station is serial and you use a USB 2.0 usb-serial converter (like pl2303 or FTDI) a hub is not needed.
I don't remember if WS23xx needs an external USB-serial converter or if there is one in the station itself.

Anyway, when you want to be sure to rule out the USB 2.0/1.x issue, please use a USB 2.x hub inbetween.

I can now login and see a lot of USB low level errors in dmesg.
Please put a USB 2.0 hub inbetween. I would like to rule out,
that is just that known hub issue, before I dig deeper.

I bought a Belkin 4 Ports Travel USB hub and so far comms has been good for 7 hours.
Hopefully it keeps going for the rest of the week.
