Weatherflow - Tempest

Post by Korey »

Are there plans to add this unit to the list of supported weather stations?

I have a beta unit showing up sometime soon, so I can supply data to help get the Tempest units integrated if needed.

I am waiting to get my device to test it with the PWS_Dashboard (WeatherFlow version demo at https://pwsdashboard.com/pwsWD/)

I was assured (also on the developers topic https://community.weatherflow.com/c/developers) that there will be no differences in the data. Not in the UDP nor in the JSON compared to the current WeatherFlow API-version.

As you now have one of the first devices, could you check if there are any differences and post the JSON files?

Thanks in advance,

Wim

I too just installed a Tempest, and note that the latest version of Meteobridge recognizes the unit's serial number as BOTH the Weatherflow's older "Air" and "Sky" modules. If this is an acceptable solution going forward, perhaps there is less work to do to incorporate Tempest data, but Weatherflow plans to add a separate indoor sensor later, which may introduce differences in the data stream.

UPDATE:
I have found that using the "Air" and "Sky" option in Meteobridge results in only wind speed and direction being uploaded. All other data are not posted to various monitoring sites, so it appears the problem is a critical one for owners of new Tempest PWS's.

Hi Wim,

Is your Tempest connected to your Meteobridge, and if so have you got it set up as a primary or secondary station?

My Primary station is Davis and I was hoping to get my new Tempest added to Meteobridge as a secondary station, but can’t seem to get it working.

Any tips appreciated.

All devices must be on the same IP-network as the Meteobridge.
So make sure that the tempest is not on another accespoint as they sometimes block traffic to other parts of the network.
I have the MB-RPI I use for testing on the LAN but also tested with WiFi

===

Both the Tempest and the Sky-Air are connected as station #4 via WiFi
You can not select the IP-address as the MB listens for traffic from those devices.

Davis WLL (+Vue) as primary via LAN, AirLink as station #1 WiFi, GW1000 as #2 Wifi, PurpleAir as #3 WiFi.

The Tempest is now down since nearly a week as there was maybe not enough sun to charge it??
Just today I received a replacement to test if it is hardware or a location problem.
Fast support form the support persons at WeatherFlow. Very good.

And he Meteobridge keeps humming along. No problems there. If you connect two WF/tempest devices you get double the physical sensors.
And you can map them around as you wish.

Even added UV and Solar to the Davis VUE.

===
So it should work at your site also. Probably a WiFi-access point network which does pass the UDP packets.

I didn’t realise Meteobridge supported AirLink and PurpleAir as separate stations, very cool. Which do you prefer? I’ve been thinking about buying one of these for ages! Wonder if I could get them up on my website too...

Have you also got WeatherFlow set up under your Weather Network tab?

Thanks,
Simon

I would prefer the PurpleAir, as they are willing to add extra sensors (VOC).
Their network is also faster to view and compare ones sensor with other sensors.Their API is easier to integrate.

If you have your Davis at wl.com better use the Airlink, you then can see the combined station on the map, app a.s.o.

No, I did not even know there was something for that. And I have no idea where it is used for. Will do some reading.
Both the Sky/Air and the Tempest do their own uploading. And I can use the data in the templates to test directly and via the MB.

Hi Wim,

Thanks to your tips above I've too managed to integrate solar irradiance and UV index to my Vantage Vue system and website!

https://www.wessexweather.net

I already use the Weather34 MySQL Meteobridge template, but I'd like to experiment with your PWS_Dashboard template purely using data from my Tempest, rather than from my main station.

Is this possible?

Thanks,
Simon

Yes, no problem whatsoever. The templates do not interfere.
But all templates needs maintenance so please update the PWS_Dashboard regularly. See the readme's at https://pwsdashboard.com
And post remarks, questions a.s.o. in the PWS_Dashboard section of the forum: https://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index ... ,77.0.html

What I meant is, my realtime.txt text file primarily uses data from my Davis station.

I’d like to create a PWS-Dashboard site purely using data from my Tempest station, #1 on my Meteobridge.

Do I just replace all the asterisks in realtimeMB.txt with “1!0” before loading it as a template into Meteobridge and running it as an FTP service every x seconds?

Replying to myself to help others...

Yes replacing all the asterisks as in the above posts worked, so that the realtime.txt file contains data from my Tempest only (station #1 in Meteobridge).

I have since discovered that PWS_Dashboard can also be powered by the WeatherFlow API directly which is more straightforward but as far as I am aware can only update every 60 seconds. Using realtime.txt can update as often as 15 seconds.

I have both. PurpleAir makes more information available through their API and verifies data integrity by reporting results from two sensors. The data are similar between the two devices -- I wonder if they use the same underlying laser counting system? You can see our reports here:

https://bollar.org/wx/saratoga/wxairquality.php

I hacked Saratoga Weather and Beteljuice scripts so show both simultaneously.
