Gmail email sign in changes

Post by YorkshireHam »

From 30 May 2022 Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using 'sign in with google'.
Will I still be able to use my MBPro Red to access my gmail account to continue sending emails and if so what, if any changes will I have to make.

I am not using google mail. Sorry, no idea if that impacts SMTP services (sending mails) or just POP/IMAP (reading mails).

If so, a lot of other devices (like printers, UPS, etc) will no longer be able to send you a status mail. Would be a stupid move by google IMHO, but may be they think that they already reached world dominance and can now start pestering their users ;-).

Use secure app passwords and everything will continue to work as before.

I have now generated a secure app password, entered it into my Meteobridge and emails are still being sent so hopefully when Google implement this extra layer of security all should be fine.

If GMAIL wanted to actually be really useful they can start by removing the dot and + alias from email addresses which are no longer a feature but have become a vulnerability

I've tried for ages to configure Gmail settings, without success. Username and password not accepted. I'm using an app password, and have tried deleting that and creating another but still no success. I've been through all the authentication options. Port 587. smtp.gmail.com.
Is there a trick I'm missing?

This is what my meteobridge settings for gmail look like.. "password" is a generated App Password as mentioned above.

Thanks for that. I've tried the exact equivalent. Response is
"Error: Failed to send email: msmtp: authentication failed (method PLAIN) msmtp: server message: 535-5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted."

Not sure why you're seeing "msmtp" (a Linux thing?) and "method PLAIN" (when it should be "starttls") .. Any way, did you make sure the generated App Password had no spaces in it when you copied it into Meteobridge? It displays on Google w/ spaces to make it easier to read, but the entered password should have no spaces.

Thanks again. Definitely no spaces in app password. Attached is exactly what I see.
