Can i use a big USB harddisk instead of a USB stick?

Post by Paul »

Hello,

I had a working NSLU2 with a 2gb harddisk in a external USB harddisk case.
This worked fine, but the harddisk started to become noisy, so i replaced it with a bigger (10GB) harddisk.

I installed version 4.3 and had it autoupdate to 4.3C. All fine but....
When i look with windows xp (using samba) I see a file called "transfer" of approx 4gb, a file called "uploades" of 1 kb and a file "weather" of approx 800Mb.

Is this correct??? Should it not be a subdirectory and not a file?
The log says:
logger (26.05.2009 20:46:56): data logger started.

transfer should be a folder.

transfer folder is not vital, but this indicates that your system may have file system inconsistencies.
This is very interesting, as normally a bad USB stick is causing this kind of trouble... I start thinking of the USB files ystem interface being the root cuase for these kind of errors and not a bad USB stick. Hard to believe, but I will start thinking about that.

Hello,

Thank you for trying to solve this.
By the way, i have paid for a official licence for meteohub :cheer:

To try to debug this i did the following:

-Flash the NSLU2 with the latest "meteohub-firmware-2.3.bin"
-delete all partitions that Windows XP could find on the external USB harddisk
-Connect a 256MB USB stick with "meteohub-v4.3-2GB.rar" to the bottom USB connecton
-and when disk 2 started to blink slowly, i connected the empty USB harddisk to the other USB port.
-after a while the install was ready and the NSLU2 shut down automatically.
-I than removed the USB stick and connected my Cresta weatherstation to the same USB port that previously had the 256MB installer USB stick.
-When i use my XP laptop to go to \\\\192.168.1.77\\public i see the files transfer, upload and weather. See attachment.

This seems to be reproducable.

If i can help you te better debug this (as i cannot use it right now), please tell me what you want me to do!

Best regards,

Paul

When using the two sticks method Meteohub writes a log onto the installer stick. What does the log say?

When you have a windows XP machine at hand, please try to setup USB stick with DiskImage. This is fastest and most reliable option. (please make sure to use "physical disk" mode!).

Log files: [file name=Archive.zip size=689]http://www.meteohub.de/joomla/images/fb ... rchive.zip[/file]
I will try your suggestion with DiskImage next...

And IT WORKS!!!! :cheer:
The diskimage tool seems to make the difference!
I hope my logs of the fauly situation can help you to debug it.

By the way, i'm using a 6GB harddisk and not a 10GB as
i said incorrectly in my original posting.
